Looking for Eric

Post by sound world »

With son away, partner and I decided to go *totally mad* and go to a FILM together last night, just the two of us,for the first time in ages.No Disney,no bloody animatronics,no animal cutesy characters...

'Looking for Eric',you've probably read about. Directed by Ken Loach,so it's heavily realist-although the main idea, that a beleaguered Mancunian Dad (Eric) is helped out of his predicament by the periodic apparition of another Eric,Eric Cantona with his trademark philosophy,is completely surreal.(Hence the punning title). However the 'realism' is intensely graphic, and readily suggests the difficulties of life in the inner city for Dad's stepchildren; but there's also a believable love story (Dad and estranged Mum slowly coming back together),some great football, and a good deal of sidesplitting dialogue, while Ken Loach's socialism is very subtly put across by the use of Eric (Dad's) mates,PO workers, who go to the matches together, try a bit of self-improvement,banter and josh in the pub,and help each other out, ultimately combining to solve (Dad) Eric and his family's (serious) predicament in a way which brings the 'Cantona' element full circle.
It's a great film with something of everything-drama,shocking reality, big issues,fantasy,heart-warming (but not sentimental) moments, and not least, humour. And great acting-as so often with Loach,it looks like he's often filming life as it happens right in front of him rather than using actors. Highly recommended.

Cantona... each time I think about him I remember this this french advert :

I believe in your smile everyday
But I know that you're far from my way
When I talk to the moon I can hear you
In the dark I can see, I can feel your light

I'll be renting this one. Cantona is mesmerising. I WANT HIM. *faints from overwhelming lust*
Ice, you were the one most tender with the rivers.
You, the roof of the waves, layer after layer after layer ...
