"Billy Elliot' on stage

Post by RobB »

I've never seen the film but yesterday, with my partner, I went to the Victoria Palace theatre in London to watch the stage musical version of 'Billy Elliot'. And quiet amazing it was too. :D
Set in Co.Durham in 1985 (I think),and set to the backing of the coal miners strike,Billy Elliot is a 12 year old boy who gives up boxing training to take up ballet classes.

All the children were excellent (anyone who don't approve of young children using bad language might well be offended) and the various set pieces were very well staged. Highlights included the 'dancing outfits', Billy's aerial dance sequence, the singing miners descending into the pit (with just their helmet lamps visable in the gloom) and the way the staircase/bed set kept rising through the stage. All very clever and very enjoyable.

I think the show has been running for six years and seeing yesterday afternoons performance,I can understand why. :)
