Yes, I can see this working for Stina also. Perhaps she should be sure to set the price for a new album herself (she'll be selling slightly less copies than Radiohead). But if the 50.000 copies she sells from each album would be sold through her own website, then the profits would be bigger for herself. Besides that, a lot of musicwebsites still list album sold by the artist websites only.

I'd even be willing to pay for the album to be recorded in advance. Just to be sure that Stina will release music again in the future.

I don't agree with you. The majority of the people think there's too much music released nowadays. It's a lot of crap in their opinions. They wouldn't mind to have less to choose from.
blue wrote:They're not interested in non-mainstream music; the profits go into their own pockets, these days.
Remember that's not entirely the fault of the musicindustry. It are the stakeholders that demand more profits so they'll make a quick buck. It's a problem emerging in all business nowadays. No more longterm businessplans.
blue wrote:Add to that their idiotic and vindictive stance re downloading, and the inflated price they expect people to pay for new release CDs, and it's easy to see why they've become loathed to the point where artists and public are actively seeking their demise.
Recordcompanies already are changing their strategy. It will only be a matter of time before the music won't be so important. Artists like Robbie Williams and Madonna signed contracts in which the recordcompany gets a percentage of all profits made on tours and merchandise.

Sadly this makes a bad case for emerging artists: no profits from touring, no profits from merchandise. Yet a lot of costs for recording music and videos. Who'll be willing to invest? It might well be that there'll be less new releases in the near future just because of that reason.
blue wrote:What Radiohead are effectively doing here is leaking their own album to the 'net, giving people the option to pay what they like for it, and counting on the fact that many in their large and devoted fanbase will ALSO want a physical copy of the album with artwork. (Anecdotal evidence from the boards in the past couple of days seems to suggest they are correct.)
I guess that it's a really smart move. Still I don't understand why Radiohead is in talks with a recordcompany for releasing the album "properly". By then, everyone should have bought this album so I don't see the use in it.
blue wrote:There's no way a record company would have gone along with something like that.
Recordcompanies are watching. If this works, they'll try something similar too.
blue wrote:I think a lot of smaller bands/artists may end up being very grateful to them for breaking new ground.
I doubt that smaller bands will have enough money to fund the release themselves. And a move like Radiohead requires a solid fanbase. How do you build a fanbase nowadays? It's presscoverage.... and the press are currently mostly reporting the big recordcompany artist.

For a lot of people it's a form of selfvalidation Dave. If you listen to all the popular music then you can't be a bad person, right?

I guess that makes us... ehm [b)]

Do people really think like that after they're about 16? If they do,they're pretty sad....

I don't know about that Paul, certainly just from the larger boards I visit (which are devoted to single bands/artists), the 'other artists' sections seem to be huge, thriving and very diverse. Maybe it's just that those particular bands/artists attract a high proportion of people who are really passionate about music, maybe the larger public doesn't have the same level of interest.
pgss wrote:Sadly this makes a bad case for emerging artists: no profits from touring, no profits from merchandise. Yet a lot of costs for recording music and videos. Who'll be willing to invest? It might well be that there'll be less new releases in the near future just because of that reason.
But if artists are not continually paying back advances to record companies out of what they earn, they should be better off financially overall - I mean, it's not record companies who pay for recording costs and video costs. They may put that money up initially, but they 'recoup' that money from the artists' earnings. It's one of the biggest complaints artists have about record companies. They claw back literally every penny they can for 'costs'. To demonstrate the extraordinary lengths they go to in this respect, Tori Amos tells a story in her book Piece by Piece about how, when one of her albums had done well in the charts, her record company sent her a lavish arrangement of flowers as congratulations. When she was going through her accounts later, she found that the record company had claimed the cost of the flowers back from her.

Home studios and promos made for internet sources like youtube etc are lowering the costs for artists, so I can see many of them increasingly opting to self-finance.

I'm not sure that's been confirmed yet Paul, but if they are going to negotiate with a record company for a traditional cd release, they'll be in a much stronger position to get things on their terms if they can show that they can achieve respectable sales without any help. It may be that they're worried the website won't cope with demand, or their pressing/distribution method isn't big enough. :?: Or it may be a back catalogue thing - Radiohead albums tend to sell steadily over a long period of time.

I'm not sure press coverage is actually as vital as the media makes it seem .... fanbases tend to be built initially from live work. That was certainly the case with Radiohead, who were a huge live band for a good 18 months before 'Creep' happened and they began getting all the press coverage. Let's not forget also the impact that the internet has had on spreading the word about new bands/artists. Look at Arctic Monkeys, to take a contemporary example. They were an internet and live phenomenon before their first album came out.

Statement from Radiohead's management team confirming they're about to sign a deal with a record company for a traditional cd release - the band feel 'this album deserves to be brought into the mass market'.

Which sort of begs the question - what has this whole maneouvre been about? If this traditional release has been intended all along, it's looking unpleasantly like a deliberate ploy to get devoted fans to fork out £40 for the box set. I can't believe they'd do that, but I suspect it's how a lot of those fans who've pre-ordered are going to see it. :?

I think they're going to have to do some damage limitation interviews quite rapidly.

I'm so glad I didn't opt for the box set. :D

I would think every band feels that their latest album 'deserves to be brought into the mass market'.

Yeah I hate to think it, but it's looking that way. I'm reserving judgement till I read what they have to say about it, but I think they may have shot themselves in the foot a bit. The entire music industry/media was hailing them as radical and experimental with this no-record-company move, and now they just look ... silly at best, hypocritical and manipulative at worst. And greedy.

Actually some of the new material is decidedly subpar, if the live versions were anything to go by - things like 'Bodysnatchers' and '15 Step'. They'd have to have worked miracles with them in the studio for me to want to listen to them.

On the other hand, 'Videotape', 'Arpeggi' and the new 'Nude', amongst others, make me melt into a little puddle of slushiness. I'll probably forgive them the promotional shenanigans the minute I hear those. :D

I've been listening to some tracks non-stop, I just can't get over them ... the new versions of old live favourites 'Nude' and 'Reckoner' are awesome, some of Yorke's best vocal performances ever, I think.  This is what has stunned me about the new album, he's really SINGING again, like an angel. He's finally gotten over his embarrassment at having such a beautiful voice. [love] [love] [love]

Of course everyone was waiting to see how Arpeggi and Videotape would come out in the studio versions, and for me the band have got them absolutely right, they're both utterly gorgeous. Very pared down, subdued compared to the live versions which has caused disappointment to some fans, but I never particularly liked the band version of Arpeggi so I'm delighted with the final version. The other huge highlight of the record for me is 'All I Need', a track I wasn't sure about when it was played live but oh my god, it's fantastic. ^ ^

Of the more conventional stuff - Bodysnatchers, Open Pick (which has now become Jigsaw Falling Into Place) - the only one I really like is 'House of Cards', I'm just not into Radiohead-does-indie-pop, really. I sometimes feel like they do tracks like this in an attempt to 'keep it real', because they worry about people calling them pretentious, and it's just not necessary.

I think if they had kicked those tracks off onto the bonus disc, and put 'Down Is The New Up' and 'Go Slowly' on the album proper, this would have been an outstanding record from beginning to end. As it is, just with the tracks I love, it's up there with Kid A / Amnesiac era for me.

You can download the album for free at inrainbows.com (and now we know it was just a marketing strategy, with a 'proper' cd release to come, I would suggest you DON'T pay anything for the download - I'm pissed off at paying ten quid for it, thinking it and the boxset were the only options available to me), but if you want to hear the tracks first here are some youtube links:
