Uff, I still feel pretty confused...apple is better-no it's not- softwre is better-it's crap etc etc... 
No, I never tried Linux and I don't know if I'd find it easy....

Mac Os X is better than Windows for now as an operating system.
But softwares for Mac with Intel processors suck big time, and globally most of the best and various softwares can be found on Windows only.
Linux is getting better and better but I don't advice it if you have no technical knowledge.

Sorry if I confused you. it's probably better to get one person's advice, and I think Alex knows more than me about this subject.
(by the way, the HP has that Lightscribe disc burner, that I've always wanted to try out.. it will burn a label onto your CD. But you have to use special blank CDs)

No dear, it's not you who confused me, I just can't pick a side and I understand all pros and cons here.
I've never really done anything technical so I don't even know if I could ever pick it up, the whole programming world seems a bit tough to me, but I guess that when you know what to do is less cryptic than I imagine. I remember when Linux came out, I was still in Italy and of course, the computer-freak friends of my then-flame were all for it and couldn's stop talking of their pcs home. Mah. I'm sure in a few years my son will manage the medium much better than I every did.
My boyfriend is swinging too now. He wanted the HP but doesn't want to order it from a internet, retailer although cheaper, because he's afraid there wouldn't be support if something went wrong. A moment later he thinks we could buy a macbook each (sorry I kept saying imac) or one macbook and one HP... The lightscribe thing is one of the point that makes the HP very appealing...

Looks like we're going to buy a macbook after all. I had found a very cheap HP Pavillion on a internet retail, but we've found out that there by Apple you can get special discounts if you're a student or a teacher, and my boyfriend is the latter. It does make a difference so he's all for it. If they're gonna assure us it's gonna be here before we leave, tomorrow will be the day to order!
I still am very interested in the HP too anyway, I know my boyfriend, he will end up monopolizing the laptop, even though I was the Apple fan and he the HP...

anyway, with a macIntel you can install Windows XP so it's not a dead end if mac softwares suck.
