Here on this site you need to link it to a web host.
But you could always put it up on the Nordenstam Shelter,where it doesn't need a webhost.(If your pic is a .jpg it's probably OK but big files (.tiff etc) won't work.That might be why your Avatar doesn't work.Take it to http://photobucket.com/ and try from there.)

Then:-

Join the Shelter first if you haven't already [crazy]
Click on 'Photos' and then 'Add Photo'
then 'Choose file'-when you locate the pic on your computer,
give it a name,eg 'Independent'(where it says 'Name'),
and then hit 'Upload' at the bottom of that page.Wait for it to upload-if you're on Dialup it can take a minute or two.

OK General Simplissimo...i've just tried the Nordenstam shelter route and after 20 minutes of uploading ,i get the same *The page cannot be displayed* page as i get when trying to upload onto Photobucket (which ive been attempting for the last week or so...) [fire]
Its not like its a full page glossy multi=color photo,just a simple 4 and a half inch square b/w tif. pic.
I feel so frigging stoopid

Does your scanner let you save things as jpgs? That might be the answer.
Or...email it to me (sound_world@hotmail.com) as a Tiff and I'll have a go.

upload your image, then copy/paste one of the links they'll give you("direct link to image" is nice)

I give up .It s bigger than the 1mb attachment limit i can send so i'll send you a copy by good old fashioned snail mail...you are at still the same address Dave,i assume?

Do you have a larger sized jpeg/tiff of it?

I know the Nordenstam Shelter is currently being a bit strangled by Yahoo limits, so was wondering if you could email me a copy of the original file (pleeeaase!) so I could upload it there personally, if you had no objections?
