On the subject of some of the women artists featured in that section ... no PJ Harvey, but Justine Frischmann? No Tori Amos, but Regina Spektor, who apparently 'brought the piano back into pop music'? Um ..... One has to wonder about the lack of knowledge some of these current 'women in rock' are exhibiting about their antecedents.

Well,it's dubbed 'Women in music' which is even more galling,making the usual rock assumption that 'music' didn't exist before c.1950,and that 'music' since then is limited to the popular field.
As ever these things aren't really about music per se,but about popular culture,which is why a musical featherweight like Madonna gets trumpeted to the skies,because she is undoubtedly a heavyweight of popular culture.
But you get used to that kind of simple-mindedness.
So within the restricted parameters of pop thinking,I'm surprised nobody cited Joni Mitchell,who is surely the antecedent for all the Tori etc singer/songwriter brigade; nobody mentions Aretha Franklin,whose style is cloned in every subsequent soul/black pop singer;while the remark about the piano is laughable; it never went away,but most trumped-up rock critics have tin ears.
Glad that Sandy Denny got a mention; I think her voice is the one I'd have on my desert island when all's said and done; and Linda Thompson's favourite,'The Sea',is mine too.

I thought Joni was cited, Dave? I can't remember by which musician, though. Maybe I'm imagining it. But yes, totally agree about the surprising lack of Aretha in the list, too - yet someone like Anita Baker is there. Very strange.

I think Tori has spoken several times of her love for Joni, and how much of an influence she was when T was a teenager. I've always personally heard far more influence from Joni than the mentioned-ad-nauseum Kate Bush in Tori's whole songwriting style, for me she's a notable addition to a fine American songwriting tradition, and I think that's how she sees herself too.

I'm still amazed that none of the women interviewed have cited Polly Harvey as an influential musician. It makes you wonder what people actually listen to.

It could be Stina-pity her sleeve isn't rolled all the way up,the star tattoo would give it away.

Yes,it could be Anna now that you mention it. The photo isn't of a typical Stina-like pose I guess.

Happy? I think she looks rather wistful myself but maybe thats equates to happiness for Stina?

Try to find the video for "Walk" by Fleshquartet and Wadling on YouTube. Stina smiles in that video and to me it seems that she was genuinly having fun making that.
