Slightly disagree with you, Paul, but I understand Mathilde Santing's sometimes very polite, but also soulful, vocals could be a little boring. She's anyway a quite brillant cover artist. Her rendition of both Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycle" and "Is there any way out of this dream", both from that Coppola's musical comedy I can't remember the title of, and John Cale's "Close Watch" are equal, if not superior to the originals. I found myself very moved by her interpretation.

Now ending to listen to "Amplifier Worship" by Japanese stone rockers/doom metallers Boris, an album out on Southern Lord, a very good dark/drone metal label by members of Sunn 0))). [fire]

Evening is passing by while listening to "Perpetuum Moblile" by Einst?rzende Neubauten, a surprisingly restful, if sometimes terrifying, album.

not quite! [tup] i listened to some 30 sec samples of some stuff by sunn 0))) and it sound quite cool. very ambient in a mbv-like wall-of-fuzz-as-drone sort of way. but i guess their songs explode into rock epics after a couple of minutes, right spook?

While eating, I put on "So far so good, The Best of" Mathilde Santing, a class singer with some weak originals and strong covers.

I don't like Mathilde Santing. She can sing but she always covers tracks of which the originals are already so bloody marvelous. [:xx]

I just adore "de appels op de tafelsprei" a track written by Toon Hermans. And what a nice video she's has made for the track with, i believe, Erwin Olaf.

Wrong D?c! Sunn 0))) are mainly a bass and guitar duet which formerly paid tribute to the drone stone rockers Earth ("Earth's music sounded like the casual jamming of extraterrestrial monsters. It merged elements of LaMonte Young's avantgarde minimalism and Eastern music's transcendental ecstasy and drenched them into gothic-scifi atmospheres." - Mister Scaruffi [pirate] ). Sunn O))) expends the palette and add other instruments or guests. It's first of all instrumental music, except for some spoken words or vocals by guests like Julian Cope (on "My Wall", 25:30 minutes) or Mayhem's vocalist Attila Cishar [fire] . No rock epics, they are closer in spirit to Tony Conrad, but it's sonically inspired by doom metal.

Today's under the sign of the mighty Animal Collective. My copy of their "Campfire songs" album arrived yesterday, so I begin the day with this, and now playing their "Danse Manatee". Both recordings are under their generally huge standards, some kind of transition records in their still short career, but enjoyable anyway.

You all really can try their last "Sung Tongs", that record is very melodic and tender, while still keeping their fresh infantile/childlike spirit all over.

I saw her on a Dutch television program called "Masterclass" she was teaching Birgit and Mirjam Timmer (from Twarres) some new techniques. She told there that she has one trick to sing more softly when she wants to sound impressive, instead of singing louder.

In my humble opinion she's sucking the energy out of songs, resulting in a dull sounding song that could have been a "slaapliedje" (can't figure what the right English word is for that).

well, I don't like Toon Hermans himself either, but he happens to be the writer of this simply beautiful track.

I'm listening to a self recorded audio cd of the songs i have of her, since i just got to know her and i didn't get a chance to buy her cd anywhere (and i also first want to know if i really like her). It's mostly of her previous album, but i must say that from the few songs i've heard of the new one, which are "sunny road", "lifesaver" and especially "serenade", i really do like them so far.
They are quiet and simple and yet full of melody the lyrics are great. If i do get a chance to find her new album (for a reasonable price) i might go ahead and buy it. Of course i'll let you know what i think of it then! I'll do that in the Emiliana thread of course...

Here I feel it's a matter of taste indeed. It's like, if I could find that Tori Amos has obviously a beautiful and sensual voice, it doesn't move me at all, except on "Little Earthquake" which I still consider her masterpiece, even A masterpiece. Lisa Germano's voice, if less obviously beautiful, moves me hugely, but many people, I remember very clearly Rob is among them, find her voice bland and boring. Something we can't explain. I really like Mathilde Santing's voice, yes, but why?

My favourite women singers of the moment are Joanna Newsom and Mirah. And I dig more and more the voice of Eleanor Friedberger from The Fiery Furnaces .

Now playing the LCD Soundsystem album, a very fine danceable album where James Murphy's vocals sometimes reminds me of Girls vs Boys' Scott McCloud, there's even moment they sounds slightly like George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and the last track is very Brian Eno-like ("Another Green World", "Before and after science"). While writing this, the record is finished.

So now playing the bonus cd with their former singles and b-sides. Let's dance! [bday]

Had to give up with LCD Sounsystem for my desire to play back "Arrived in gold" by Sightings was too strong to contain (I have to go for a training in about 15 minutes). Hey, ~Michael, have you heard it? *look around* ~Michael, where are you ? [crazy]

A quite less violent and confrontational affair than their previous ones, but in many ways more radical, at the same time more abstract, while sometimes almost danceable, I say almost. They sounds like nothing else, very strong stuff, goodness!!! [music] [tup]
