Most played CD this last week: "Travel like in songs", Rebecka T?rnqvist. Her previous album "Vad jag vill" was so good that I did expect the new one not to be fulfilling my hopes of a repeat. And, well, indeed, it is not as good. It does lack the spark that struck me when hearing "Vad jag vill". I believe she ought to write and sing in Swedish instead of English, as on "Vad jag vill" (btw her only Swedish album).

And: Chick Corea Electric Band, Dhaffer Youssef, mix from my iPod.

Jazz, then Mirah, then Shannon Wright

Post by Spookrijder »

Ah, Picsou, finally some jazz thanks to you Picsou. [angel] Dave won't feel too alone anymore. :)

Began the day with "Advisory Committee" by Mirah where I've finally found someone who could be the equal of Lisa Germano : the songs are even melodically superior, me think, while the arrangement challenges Germano's genius thanks to Phil Elvrum's brilliance. Furthermore, there's that same difficulty to track down their influences, both being rooted into much European folk music, and both creating an impressive batch of layered lo-fi and grandiose wall-of-sound, if in a very different way.

Now playing the quite tormented "Over the sun" by Shannon Wright, very fine too, if a little lesser essential than Mirah's.

So glad you like the Mirah, Christian, Advisory Committee is brilliant! She's also incredibly charming in concert.

Currently listening to Nynke Laverman who has recorded some fado's with the lyrics sung in Frisian. Very impressive.

Beside that I've been listening a lot to Radiohead. I never really got into Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief. It's happening now.

change of pace

i haven't been listening to much recently, but yesterday i heard that famous frisian chanson duo orchestral manouevres in the dark [rolling] and their album dazzle ships, the last decent thing they did. yer man's singing is rather over emotive at times and there's no 'enola gay' or 'joan of arc' on there, but the more experimental actaully have aged less than those well known tracks.

The Clientele and The Serenes

Post by Spookrijder »

Just played "The Violet Hour" by The Clientele, an melancholic English guitar band which makes me feel slightly nostalgic for Felt, one of my late eighties favourite band. But the voice and the guitar laces reminds me more of that fine Dutch band called The Serenes and their little jewel of a record called "Barefoot and Pregnant" which was out in 1990 and I'm playing it rrrrrrrrriiiiight now ^ .

Two records that I've listened to lately and twice, "Emergency and I" by The Dismemberment Plan and "desperate youth, blood thristy babes" by TV On The Radio, and both are puzzling me about their quality. The first one, if quite genuine, sounds very amateurish and underachieved, the second one is quite better but extremely repetitive and a bit tiring. Both records got great reviews, but then...

A good surprise on the other hand is "Tyrannosaurus Hives" by The Hives, first because I didn't know they are Swedish, second because that's fucking good rock'n'roll, if not such a novelty, anyway the energy is there and it's a pleasure to hear it.

I don't know why, but this week i'm stuck with Mary Timony's "The Golden Dove" and Frou-Frou's "Details"! :)
Both albums are nothing special, but they somehow magnetize me every time i look at my CD's and wonder what to listen to and i always end up to those two! 8d

i've been meaning to ask someone about this for ages - is this band named after the song from the cocteau twins' 'heaven or las vegas' album?

Despite owning over 3,000 albums, the "foreign language" ones i can count on one hand. :(

A recent addition though is my very first Spanish album, by a duo/group called Mus. the album is called "Divina Lluz" ( "Divine Light".......although sung in Spanish,Mus have very kindly had the songtitles/lyrics translated and written in English )

Very much a dark, acoustic album with a kind of folky / ambient feel. Pianos various keyboards, guitars and light percussion dominate,as does the rather breathy female vocalist, whose style i can only compare with Black Box Recorder's Sarah Nixey.

Tuneful and atmospheric,Mus wouldn't sound out of place as part of the 4ad roster. :)

Don't know where they got their name from, but the only thing i know is that it's a project of Bjork's dear fellow Guy Sigsworth. :)

The Sightings one is ok, definitely a bit more on the conventional side compared to their last one.

The LCD Soundsytem stuff is good, but it sort of begs you to play "spot the influence" while you listen to it. There's that "Never As Tired" track which is a dead ringer for John Lennon or even a Led Zeppelin ballad, the last track is so incredibly ENO-esque you could fool the man himself, "Movement" is purely channeling the Fall right down to the "-uh" he adds at the end of every word. It definitely is entertaining, but it also seems to have a distinct "sell by" date on it.

The Observer had a good tongue twisting line that describes it well:

"If you've never heard most of the music LCD stuff into themselves you'll think it's worthy of considerable worship. You'll dance until you drop. If you know the stuff, then, yeah, it's good at being good, at knowing how to be good, and knowing what is good, and in the end, good, but not that good"

Where have I been? Pretty busy with work and school and Stylus. Not to worry Spook, I'll type up a lengthy discourse on recent records soon enough 8d
