I really like Banksy's artwork, fun but clever.

Well, I'm off to the Olympics on Sunday. I'm dreading somebody committing some terrorist atrocity.
But almost worse are the legions of corporate greedmongers gleefully rubbing their hands over the Olympic flame-MacDonalds, Coke etc, who have somehow got a monopoly on the food franchise.

I had a fantastic time yesterday. The buzz in London is great, really friendly. No problems with transport or crowds.
Back again next Sunday with my son - who has been in Peru for a month! a rite of passage, amazing experience for him...can't wait to see him, he gets back Friday.

Peru! What brought him there? I was trying to remember how old your son would be, Dave. I'm guessing 16-ish? Am I way off?

I'm on a public computer and supposed to be looking for jobs, but as I had the opportunity I just wanted to quickly stop in and say hello and let you know I haven't fallen off a cliff (yet!) The laptop I was posting on belonging to my daughter's partner went kaput some months ago, and so annoyed was he that he has basically banned myself and Other Grandmother from going on the new one while we are looking after Rocco. Which I think is ridiculous considering we are providing free childcare for his son 12 hours a day out of the kindness of our hearts, but there you go.

Dave, thanks for your phonecall and I'm so sorry if I sounded rather baffled and/or guarded at first, I was on the till at work and I could barely hear you because of the noise of people outside in the mall, I heard what I thought was someone calling himself 'Dave from B+Q', I thought it was some sort of cold selling call! You said something about everyone wondering how I was and I thought to myself blimey, these sales tactics have gotten very personal. I don't need anything from B+Q.

It was lovely to hear from you, I just wish we could have spoken for longer. I've had to get a new phone since then so I will PM you the number. Incidentally, is the number you rang from your landline? I've put it in my new phonebook but obviously want to check whether it's your mobile or your home phone.

Angie, thanks for your last PM, I will try to answer it next time, I only have an hour on this computer and most of it is used up already with jobhunting. I hope all is well with you, I bet Ellis is huge now! Rocco will be two in October but he looks more like a four year old.

Well the main bit of news for me is that sadly Julian Graves, the company I worked for, finally went under a few weeks ago - we were all made redundant on the 30th of July, well over 700 employees. Although I expected it for a long time it has still been a bit unreal and difficult to deal with, I've never been made redundant before. I was hoping to get something else quite quickly but I think that was a little unrealistic given the dreadful economic/work situation at the moment. My last wage ran out at the end of last week so I had to go and sign on, which I was desperately hoping to avoid. Still, there are things the Job Centre can help you with if you are made redundant, so I intend to take advantage of any retraining that might be offered if another job isn't forthcoming soon. We'll see what happens.

In the meantime, as I'm now officially signed on I'm entitled to one free hour a week on the computer at the library, so I'll be able to stop in a bit more regularly, if briefly!

Sorry to read that you've been made redundant,hopefully something will crop up soon. Perhaps you can serve as a volunteer in a local charity shop for a few hours a week, just to keep your hand in and not get too rusty?

Our H&B shop is still open (or it was last week when i walked by) but i guess they are on borrowed time now.

I think Dave must have been inviting you to his B-B-Q.....you did well to feign bafflement?

Tough times indeed... sad that your JG job ended, I guess things like JG are a luxury kind of shopping nowadays.

I'm surprised the Library only gives you one free hour a week on the net. Even in the early days of Library internet availability I could walk into my local Library anytime, any day, and get an hour's session online for free (and I wasn't unemployed). The first two years of my posts at CQD were done that way.

So sad to know you're unemployed now, this is harsh time for so many people these days

I really hope the worlwide economy will not collapse even more in Europe, as the poorest ones are the firsts to be affected (and bright days are long gone).

Could your update your email profile please, as the ntlworld.com one is not working.

I don't have an email address alex, but i was told at the job centre on friday that i can get one set up at the library (it seems you need one nowadays to apply for jobs, so many employers now expect you to submit your cv online). As soon as i've got one i'll update it.
