Desire Avenue

A fantastic film about the short life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer and lyricist of Joy Division.
Samantha Morton is superb, Sam Reilly does a great job of portraying Ian, and overall it's a fine directorial debut from Anton Corbijn.
The thing that impressed me the most (as a musician myself) is that all the actors playing the band ACTUALLY played & sang the songs!!!
And it's shot in black and white, which sort of makes sense, as all the classic JD images (also taken by Corbijn) were stark monochrome.

Highly recommended.

Corbijn is an interesting artist.
I'm quite interested to see this,as I was occasionally interested in some of JD's stuff-although I detest the reification of suicidal rock stars-and it's supposed to be a good film.

countryside has that drawback that you can never (or so) see the movies you'd love to. I missed last Lynch's, and now this one... many others in between.

errm...I'm assuming ,dave,that "reification" should read "deification" ,if so have no fears on that account,this film certainly doesnt condone suicide,although it does give comprehensive reasons as to why Ian ,in his own head,would come to that terrible conclusion as the only way out of his multiple difficulties.

Hey,Franck,wait for it to come out on dvd.Its not a huge spectacular that needs to be seen on a large screen and at home you can have the volume as loud you like.Where i saw it ,the volume was too low for me.

A few years back I read his wife's account of the whole epsiode.The trouble with suicide is that those left behind have to deal with the mess.

re Deborah Curtis-her book was used as the basis of the film,She wa sco writer and co producer.
Any JD fan really should see this film,Its truly excellent. [tup] [tup] [tup]

Control won five awards at the British independent film awards last night-including ,best film,best actor,best director and best supporting actor.
All very well deserved.

I'll rent it when it's out on DVD. I'm not a fan of Joy Division but Curtis was an intriguing figure.

I hope I can see the movie, in any form, as soon as possible. JD are one of my biggest influences and I keep feeling for Ian. I've seen several TV interviews with Corbijn, so I'm really curious. What struck me the most was that one of the interviewers, Claudia de Breij, didn't know who JD were...what a scandal, I'm sure she's not THAT young, it's really hard to conceive there are people who don't know them, especially having so many derivative groups in auge RIGHT NOW.
