Akumu Tantei (Nightmare Detective)

Ok, bizarre film time. Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, responsible for some very strange and disturbing films such as Testuo and A Snake Of June (still one of my favourite films ever), Akumu Tantei is the story of an insomniac rookie detective investigating apparent suicides by unsuicidal people, made even more bizarre by the fact that the suicides are occuring whilst they are asleep.
The detective, convinced there is more to this than unrelated suicides, enlists the help of a young man who claims to have the ability to enter the dreams of other people, where they discover something much, much worse...
Very much like a Japanese David Lynch/Cronnenberg film, this is incredibly intense, at times terrifying, multilayered cinema. It's also the first part in a trilogy. The second film is due for release in Japan sometime soon.
If you are familiar with Shinya's other works, you'll know that this is not going to be an easy experience, but you'll know it will have it's rewards too. If you are new to his works, you're in for one hell of a psycho/physical thrill ride!
