'Dead Birds'
I'm not sure if this is a good movie or not?
I've watched it on dvd a couple of times and....well,its ok but I'm kind of frustrated that it wasn't a sgood as it could have been.
Basically a 'horror western,' which is unusual in its self,the film is set in Alabama in 1863 and a bunch of bank robbing outlaws hold up fro the night in a deserted planatation house.
The previous owner,in a bid to bring back his dying/dead wife,uses a book of instructions on how sacrificing slaves can return the dead. Instead though the spells unleash demonic forces that take over the whole family and all who stay in the house.

Absolute tosh of course but entertaining tosh. There are some genuinely creepy effects but overall,the narrative and pacing is muddled.The overall creepy atmosphere is top notch though.

Anyone else seen it?

Without giving too much of the plot away,'Till Human Voices....." is about a man ( Guy Pearce) who returns to his childhood home to bury his father, and he meets a woman ( Helene Bonham Carter) who reminds him of a friend who disappeared during a midnight swim in a river when they were children.
Its a very slowwwwwwwww paced film,so much so that the original Australian film which told the story in chronolgical order had to be re-cut as 'flashbacks' for the American market.

It appears that the Americans were not prepared to wait forty minutes for the two leads to enter the story.

Oh Rob, 'Till Human Voices Wake Us' is one of my all-time favourite films, I had it listed in my top 10 when we did that topic ages ago. It's a really beautiful, moving film, the Guy Pearce character is heartbreaking. The whole thing is so wonderfully filmed too, slow indeed but poetically so. Daniel, try and find it to rent if you can, I think you'd enjoy it.

It would be very light viewing for an Ingmar Bergman fan such as yourself Dave, but I think you'd enjoy it as a kind of Sunday afternoon thing. Some of the imagery is so beautiful, you get the feeling it was really a labour of love for the guy who wrote and directed it, and the evocation of rural Australia in the Guy Pearce character's childhood leaves a lasting impression. There's just something about it that stays with you.

Actually I've spent most of Xmas watching Laurel and Hardy and The Simpsons.

Oh well, 'nuff said!
