Desire Avenue

I was listening to a bit of Talk Talk just now, and it occurred to me that they are one of several bands/artists who I wasn't really aware of before posting on the various incarnations of this forum and being introduced/recommended to them by people here.

Struck me as an interesting idea for a thread.

In the case of Talk Talk, I knew that fairly dull eponymous single, and thought that was the sum of them, back in the 80s. How wrong I was! Mark Hollis was even more of a revelation, entirely thanks to the recommendations of folk here.. I've also reappraised and grown to love a few artists I'd previously thought less of, like Tori Amos, Rickie Lee Jones.
So for me, off the top of my head, some other artists I adore, recommended by people here include Anja Garbarek, Joanna Newsom, Radiohead, Supersilent, Bark Psychosis, Under Byen, Fiona Apple, Rachels...and quite a few more.
How about anyone else?

Dave, you should try the first solo-album from Mark Hollis. I can't remember the name right now. But it's very different from Talk Talk (less radiofriendly) but those tracks are really brilliant.

Tori Amos has been praised and then slashed on this board. She is someone whom I still listen to because the messages (mainly from Beth in case of Tori Amos), while I would have forgotten about if it weren't for these boards. Wether it's a good thing, I really don't know. I have bought her last three albums which I never play.

Indeed it is. I've tried to bring singers like Tasmin Archer, Siobhan Donaghy, Tanita Tikaram and Emiliana Torrini to you attention her.

Really we should send some mixcd's to each other. Then we could listen to each others taste in music, get more in to it. That would give us something to discuss for as long that Stina won't release new music.

Don't remember, Anna Ternheim maybe.

A new one I recommend: Ingrid Lukas. Inspired and directed, i believe, by the very good Swiss (jazz) musician Nick Bärtsch.

I know it very well, Paul! (I think I even mentioned it up there if you look ). I think it's one of my top ten albums in the pop/rock field (as opposed to classical/jazz/ethnic) in the last 20 years. And actually it has a huge influence from all kinds of music...

I must try Lykke Li/ Kings of Convenience. Was Lykke Li the one who 'studied with Stina'?
I know Tanita Tikaram, and Siobhan D but only through her pop work.
Afraid I've tried Emiliana Torrini several times and I just don't get it. I find her music to be far too flavourless for my taste. Oh well.

Tanita Tikaram has worked with Nick Drake on her last album. The songs aren't experimental, perhaps even a bit plain. But they've been recorded in such a way that it's really nice. And I adore her voice.

The CD spin idea is a good one, Paul. They've been doing that on the Tori board for a long time, it's a good way for people to hear music they wouldn't otherwise check out.

Not sure I'd be much use as a contributor as my interest in rock/pop music is limited to a very few artists, all of whom you all know anyway. I'm much more a classical girl.

Sorry Rob, I wasn't really awake when I wrote that. I mean Nick Lowe.

I guessed it must have been Nick somebody else but i couldn't think of an alternative. Nick Lowe i'd forgotten about completely.
