Oh what a very very good album indeed, you must all buy it and make her very happy

Seriously it is pretty darn superb, sort of a really angry Shawn Colvin spliced with a bit of Ani Difranco (before she lost the plot and grew dredlocks). Try and seek out the track Bl**dy Mother F*ck*ng A**h*le, ignore the title as the song is really really poignant and moving. [b)]

Btw she is Rufus Wainright's sister (he's the one who massacred Across The Universe - the silly silly man!) [crazy]

Hmmm, never noticed this thread. I have had the martha album in my hands a few times. Always went home buying something else. Although I adore the want-albums of her brother.

That's the one she wrote about her father, isn't it?

I heard a couple of tracks from this album, I can appreciate the talent but her voice is just not my cup of tea. I have a real thing about voices.

Very true, Paul. The upside of that is that we are open to voices that would make a lot of people go 'huh?'. The downside is that if we really don't like a voice,we really don't like it. It's very rare for me to be put off by a voice, but when it does happen it renders me totally immune to the charms or otherwise of the music. I suppose Neil Young is the best example of that, for me - so many people have tried to get me into his stuff, and I can respect his craft, but that voice ......

Neil Young. Ugh. [b)] Recognizable. I hate that voice also. But he has written some damn good songs. Do you know Old Man? It was covered by N'dea Davenport (former singer of the Brand New Heavies) and that version was really wonderful.

But I have the same thing: I can love a voice or hate it.
The last years some interesting voices have emerged: macy gray, for instance. I like her voice that cracks over almost each note she sings.

The strange thing is that I almost never like malevoices. I have very little males in my cd-collection.

I can't abide Neil Young,despite everyone of my generation (the ones still free of wheelchairs) being into him.When I was young (ho ho) the endless Boom-boom-CHICK bass'n'drum patterns of 'Harvest'/'After the Goldrush'/You name it...drove me completely INSANE,especially when topped by a whining gonzo.
I respect the guy for being a survivor and having the virtue of some kind of bozo integrity,but please let me avoid his music [:xx]

I really enjoy Neil Young's music !
"The needle and the damage done" or "Harvest moon" I can hear them all day long.
And in fact it's not my generation at all, and I saw him live years ago and it was magical for me.

I don't know anything about Martha, but I've heard the track she recorded with 'Snow Patrol', 'set the fire to the third bar' quite often lately and it's a very lovely track...
