Obesity in children tripled between 1990 and 2002 in England, according to a government study Friday.

"Junk food, low exercise levels and the popularity of computer games and television have raised obesity rates in developed countries to endemic proportions, experts say.

By 2002, 15.5 percent of 2 to 11-years-olds in England were considered obese, up from 5 percent in 1990, the Department of Health said."

"Obesity levels in England are moving more toward those of the United States than Europe," she said."

Jamie Oliver's campaign to wake British people up to the disgusting processed food their kids are being fed in our schools deserves all the publicity it can get, and all the kudos. I watched the three-part programme with a growing sense of horror and disbelief at the reality of what many British kids eat, then a feeling of wonderment to see how Jamie's persistence over a year in one London borough actually made a huge difference to the kids' diet and general health. Hearing parents talk in amazement at the change in their offspring's behaviour once the junk food had been banished was truly heartwarming.
