What are y'all listening to then?
Me-1) lots of showtunes! that I'm going to be playing next week for the annual music Festival of local Special Schools (kids with learning difficulties).I've spent the last six months making arrangements of stuff like 'There's no business like showbusiness'.On it goes...
2) lots of soul/funk classics that I'm arranging for one of my bands.Saw a great old TV prog with Bill Withers the other day.That guy oozed The Groove.
3) Inbetween worky-things,listening to a bunch of things Holger Czukay (erstwhile Can bass-player) has done over the years with people like Sylvian/The Edge/Jaki Leibezeit/Jah Wobble.He's a great one-off,Holger.
4) Miles Davis,millions of outtakes from Jack Johnson/Live Evil period.He was basically living in the studio then.
5) The last five or six Oregon albums.Oregon have always been one of my favourite bands since I was a music student studying oboe among other things. I heard Paul McCandless on oboe on an Oregon album and realised that some people had gone way beyond the usual limits of the thing.
All old stuff then!!

Lots of Radiohead at the moment, though as yet I've managed to resist dl-ing any of the new tracks previewing on the current tour. I did that with the songs that came to be HTTT and I think it spoiled the album for me in the end. I want to come to the next one fresh and hungry.

PJ Harvey - Is This Desire. I've had this for the longest time and never really 'got' it. Lately though I think the penny has dropped, I can't stop listening to it and inwardly going 'woah!'

Stina Nordenstam - The World Is Saved. Every day. Not sure what that means. I tend to play Stina a lot when I'm feeling like I just want to retreat from the world.


At this precise moment I'm listening on headphones to a Tori compilation of tracks from Choirgirl and Venus.

All the Sofia Coppola's movies soundtracks !
They are wonderful

Every time I watch 'The Virgin Suicides' I promise myself to buy the soundtrack. One of these days I'll get round to it.

Incidentally, for some reason that movie always makes me think how wonderful certain Stina songs would have sounded in it. I'd love for a director one day to do the same thing with Stina tracks that Paul Thomas Anderson did with Aimee Mann's stuff in 'Magnolia'.

I recently bought three soundtrack albums of 'The Prisoner' tv series.
Yesterday afternoon I compiled a cd-r (for playing in the car) of my favourite tracks of themes,alternate themes,incidental music and speech tracks.......'I am not a number,I am a free man'.

Also been playing CocoRosie's debut album a few times of late but I don't really play much music these days.

Listening to morrissey a lot lately. His two last albums are stunning.

Oregon was a real discovery for me. History: found about them after hearing Towner on Garbarek's "Dis" (a masterpiece by the way). Well, it took some time before I got an Oregon album, but I did eventually. The first one I got must have been the first they recorded for ECM. I really loved this album.
I saw them in Paris, after they had released Ecotopia I think. There were some problems with Paul McCandless mike. Really great band! And Towner is an amazing musician.
You should all check them out!

Have you heard the last 3 or 4 Oregon albums? Really great, after a few dodgy moments in earlier albums when Trilok Gurtu had the drum chair; the new(ish) percussionist Mark Walker seems to fit like a glove.
I envy you having seen them,I still never have.They seem to have gone onto that level of performer who only ever plays in London if they come to the UK (rare enough).Keith Jarrett,who has been one of my mentors since I was 13 years old,is the same.Never seen him live either.

I think I have the 4-5 last Oregon albums, I have not played them very much. I agree that some of the albums with Gurtu are not very good.
My favorites are the 3 ECM and those older ones: Winter Light, Distant Hills, In Concert, Out Of The Woods.

Alot of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone - i blame this on being in love. I still can't believe he actually exist *sigh* However, it's kinda funny because alot of Billie's songs are like "oh, he beats me, but I love him anyway" ..which makes me laugh. What, were they trying to brainwash women into submission?? Not in a feminist way, but really....wtf?

But the song Them There Eyes is the song for my man with the piercing blue eyes.

Billie Holiday-my kind of music.The trouble is when she sings those kind of words,you feel like she really has lived it...not many singers of those kind of songs are like that.
