Many singers of the new french music.

90% of what's on the radio nowadays. At least a few years ago I didn't feel compelled to immediately shut it off or take one of those distance zappers to it whenever it came on, but I feel it's gotten worse.

I used to love indie(!) bands and artists like belle and sebastian, bjork, sigur ros, black box recorder, the smiths.. etc. But now, i can't stand them a minute any more. damn they re all sound the same.
i hate sick sad music.

Ah me too Paul, god I played that song on a loop for months after it came out. Heard it on the radio just a few days ago and it was like being transported back to my teenage years.

I hate this person's 'music' so much, I banned my daughter from playing it in my house.

She retaliated by putting a full-screen photo of him on my computer desktop, so every time I switched the machine on I had his ugly mug glaring at me. Took me weeks to figure out how to get rid of it.

Well Paul it was nothing personal,just someone I worked with in Theatre used to play BB (but get this-just 3 songs ) over and over and over and over and...you know the type? sensitive as an air-raid to the emotions and feelings of others occupying the same airspace.
Hit that perfect beat boy [fire] was one of 'em,can't remember and have ABSOLUTELY NO WISH to remember the others.

initially i was going to say death metal et al. but actually the music and image is so preposterous that i gives me comedy entertainment value

no. just... no.

Well,there's opera and there's opera.I can't abide Verdi/Wagner/Donizetti or even Mozart opera,know just what you mean there Doc,but I can happily listen to Ravel's operas,Britten's,Janacek's,Tippett's etc etc and one of my life's ambitions is to go and see Pell?as et M?lisande (Debussy),which you can thank for bringing intimacy and mystery back to the musical stage.No screaming divas in that.It's the Stina Nordenstam of opera (hey,you can quote me on that!).

i have to admit knowing nothing of Britten, Janacek or Tippett operas, so who knows, there maybe something for me yet... but where do they get played inside of 300km radious of where i live? opera seems to be even more staid than classical music in as such as venues just don't take chances... it's all the same old stuff, and at that, all of the 'screaming diva' variety. don't get me wrong - technically it's all amazing stuff, it's just not my world...

Took the words right out of my mouth, Dave. The stuff that the classical snobs would regard as 'real' opera - Wagner and co - I can't stand to be in the same room with, but I adore the two Ravel operas, Debussy's 'Pelleas et Melisande', Britten's 'The Turn of the Screw'. I also love song-settings, which give you that experience of the operatic voice but in a scaled down way - particular favourites are Sam Barber's gorgeous 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' and Berg's 'Seven Early Songs', in both the piano and orchestral versions.

Somewhere in between is one of my most cherished pieces of vocal music, Stravinsky's 'Les Noces'. Not an opera, not a straightforward song-setting: visceral and intense and thrilling. The power of the voices in this piece just bowls you over.

Duncan, see if you can borrow a copy of Ravel's 'L'enfant et les sortileges' from somewhere - I have a feeling you might appreciate that. Also, I just had a thought, have you tried any of the Baroque operas? Handel, Vivaldi etc? Totally different soundworld from Romantic or modern opera, you might find something there to like.

Will that get you to Berlin? I saw Peter Grimes there. Terrible staging, but Peter Grimes nonetheless. And if you fancy a weekend in Prague they have Janacek on rotation.

Just to out-obscure you all, there's a kind of opera local to Zhejiang province that I liked on telly. I couldn't find any CDs or DVDs of it. You probably need to go to Zhejiang to see it.
