Having said that in the past before, well i'd like to know if some of you listen to this lady and what's your thoughts on her work,opinions, etc...?
She's about to return with a new album from Nonesuch records soon, kinda curious what it could be after a faboulous 'Life On A String'...
For me, Laurie & Tori are one of the most wise people in the world, no less, i'd really like to talk with her one day...
I saw an interview on the net last August of her, saying that she was in Athens and her work for the Olympics opening ceremony (for those who don't know this, she was about to sing in the opening instead of Bjork, but for some strange reasons she left the project later on...) and some thoughts about the similarities between the Greek 12-god religion and Buddhism , which was really interesting!!!
If i only knew where she was living these days, i would show up with a wedding ring! hahahahaha!

I can't remember if I mentioned it on CQD at the time, but Ms. Anderson performed in my city last Halloween. It was really beautiful - the basis of the performance started out as her experience as Artist in Residence for NASA, but it went all over the place. Little stories about everything with little interludes of music, and it all connected in the middle somehow. It was so cool, the whole crowd was just silent and under her spell. The stage was mostly all dark, just lit by little tea light candles all over the stage. Really, one of the neatest concert experiences I've ever had.

No doubt, Fog, she is really really brilliant and underrated. And I'm pretty sure she's spending at least part of her time in New York, because she's been with Lou Reed for a while now. You should steal her away from him, though, because as much as I love VU he seems like kind of an ass! *LOL*

Oh yes Angie, i remember that! I always wanted to know how was her show, it looks like it was brilliant, no less! I would die to watch one of her shows but i guess that if i don't visit NY City soon (i have a few plans for going there next summer though... [:xx] ) there is no possibility to see her somewhere around Greece, unfortunately!
But i thought that she broke up with Lou for ages now, are they romantically involved again?!?
Jee, i should consider more seriously to go find her and marry her as soon as possible... I guess that age doesn't matter in times like these, right? *LOL*

Yes Doc...and apparently ,after some years,she startted performing this song again in early September 2001,,which ,of course,include the words...

I made the same thought, just look at the text. But once in a while a text may fit into a different context even though it was written more 20 years ealier.

If I were to look upon the lyrics as prophetic, my suggestions is highlighted below (I love analysing texts, so no mocking) :

The song 'O Superman' is not directly related.

'O Superman' does of course connote The US' representation of itself as THE saviour of the world. So in a indirect way it IS.

The song Kuhn interpreted was not "O superman" but "From the air"... Another song from that great Laurie Anderson album, Big Science.

O superman is a parody of Jules Massenet's aria "O Souverain". I think Laurie's version is about technology slowly replacing the gap human relationships formerly filled. There is a voice asking for help: "O superman, o judge, o mum and dad" but, at the end, it's just an illusion, an answering machine. And the image of the "mum" is not comforting anymore... she's got petrochemical arms, military arms... electronic arms.

In a current context, Big Science may have different interpretations- some of them related to 9/11 (which in fact, is what art aims for, constantly changing standpoints); but it is also interesting to analyze the song having in mind the 80's because there was a taboo with the future of technology and globalization was starting to evolve, hence Laurie's inspiration for most of that ambivalent record.

Ironically, the musical pieces were actually part of a multimedia spectacle called "United States".
