Desire Avenue

Fed up of listening to Top 40 samples, hip hop, dido, avril lavigne and dance, I finally brought my own cds to play at work (today is fiona apple, kate bush and aerogramme). On one side I'm so happy to hear good music, but the secondary effect is to feel even more isolated between colleagues who know NOTHING of the kind of music we all share here...so many emotions running through me as I listen to these songs and I look around, no reaction whatsoever, probably just waiting to put on some popular beats again ...does anyone share this situation in the office?
Sorry for the blurb, pregnancy is making me even more touchy I guess...

My office is just me.There's no way on earth I could stand listening to other people's music in my workspace! especially any kind of pop-and I'm pretty certain most of what I listen to would send most people shrieking to the fire exits .Also I think it's terrible to inflict sound onto other people-a bit like wearing very smelly perfume.Music is made to be listened to,not a background annoyance.
I arranged my life long ago so that I could listen to what I wanted when I wanted!

The good thing about the place where i work is that our workshop is separate from the rest of the office (one floor lower) and we have our own stereo there that plays cd's and you can connect an mp3 player, so we can play our own music. Upstairs you see everybody listening to headphones.
My colleagues are okay with me playing some of my music, but not all day, so it's usually my cd's in the morning and other stuff after that. It's sometimes hard to listen to this other stuff when it's too far from my taste, but then i guess it's the same sometimes when they listen to my music. The only thing i hate is when people come in and turn off the music that's playing or turn down the volume, so you hardly hear it....

It is always very confronting when you hear people say they don't like something you love; I guess we just have a particular taste. But at least anything is better than these dreadful popular radio stations with the stupid dj talk and the repetition of songs.

i hate that i'm always embarrassed to play my music in front of other people and that i'm afraid turning it up to loud would be inconsiderate. other people blast their crap music all the time so i don't know why i care so much.

I'm reminded of my uncle when he makes his occasional visits to a music store,usually to buy a grandchild a cd present or something.
When he goes up to the counter and a member of staff asks 'Can I help you sir?' his usual reply is 'yeah,you can turn that crap down for a start.'
My uncle isn't a lover of loud music in stores.

I was at a party last week and after a while got fed up listening to t he shite that was on so i put on some early psychedelic Floyd and yanked up the volume and got half way through track 2 (See Emily Play)before some twat turned it right down,saying he cant hear what someones saying to him!!!

it depends which kind of party it is i guess; the ones i've been too (very few) were more background music parties with the objective to talk; not my favourite typ i tell ya. But it bothers me more when you go to a concert and people start talking through the music then!

back to the beginning, my department is a very busy one with some very loud people you just can't avoid hearing even if you don't want. There are several radios spread around and it doesn't make it any easier, it's inevitably tuned to something like skyradio or top something, in one word the most commercial and boring station. Most of the time I'm the only one not singing or humming along with all the hits. I find backgroung music nicer than total stillness at work, time goes quicker, but I can endure so much drilling before getting cranky or irritated. I need good music.
On the side of the floor where we are sitting now we can't even tune the radio, as we get only two belgian channels for old people, hence the need to bring our own cds.
It's clear that for most of my colleague music is really only a matter of background or danceable stuff, that explains why they may go in groups to see Tiesto but you'll never meet them in a concert of anything more serious.
The volume we are allowed to is pretty soft anyway, so that nobody would be really be disturbed if concentrated, I get annoyed by music I don't like anyway. I chose not too shocking stuff anyway, maybe hoping someone would "see the light'. Nothing happened of course, they just threw in the first available cd after mine, just to have that background...superbah...I don't mind everyone putting their own music in rotation, but I get one one sort of music all the time!
Over parties, if you know who's having them you know which kind of music you'll hear and I won't get high nor drunk nor dance to stuff I don't like, so finding someone interesting to talk to is really the only hope!

Ok, probably my stuff is not as ear friendly as most of the stuff my colleagues bring, but it's SOOOOOOOO UNFAIR that someone come and put my Mark Lanegan softer while nobody complains about Avril Lavigne 5 times a day and even to Jan Smit!

let's hope they don't switch to -even worse- Frans Bauer!!

I know, now you can understan how it is for me Thank god it's not a full album of JS, just a song in a compilation, there also is another track more carnival type, don't know the singer, but on repeat it gets really bothering...
