I feel like such an outsider, I've never read or seen anything Harry Potter.

I hadn't seen any of the LOTR movies, then someone gave me the box set on my birthday. I got about twenty minutes into the first one before turning it off.kuhn wrote:

Can't abide any of that stuff
Someone gave me the Philip Pullman thing a few years back too.Well written but it made me want to spit.
Luckily my son hasn't been very interested in HP or LOTR or any of that fantasy stuff at all so I haven't had to read it or go to the pics with him to see it.
I don't mind the genre if it can laugh at itself,but alas most of it and it's adherents are deadly serious.

Have you tried 'Gormenghast', Dave? Very, very dark humour in that, biting cynicism, horror, a deep vein of melancholy - brilliantly imagined too. Mervyn Peake is a law unto himself in those books.

Gormenghast is just wonderful, I also lovd the BBC adaptation of it.
Harry Potter, really really, poor, easy, kiddy crap. Yuk.
Mind you I do really like the His Dark Materials quadrilogy.
I'm currently reading Diane Purkiss: The English Civil War and a fantastic updated version of Frankenstein which is illustrated with the most amazing gothic/edward gorey pictures...

Edward Gorey! Now that's someone who fits the bill for me perfectly-fantasy and ghastliness,but screamingly funny-and extraordinary artwork.I've got all his books-but I haven't seen the Frankenstein series.

Indeed I have,I love that one.
Only a few weeks back I took delivery of 'Amphigorey Again',the latest of the four compendiums of his work-the cheapest way of getting hold of it,highly recommended.
There's a great album by Michael Mantler 'The Hapless Child' where he sets 6 of Gorey's pieces (The Sinking Spell/The Object lesson etc etc) to music,Robert Wyatt,perfectly cast,on vocals.

Hmmm, I happen to love the Harry Potter books and movies. Although it is always a bit sad to see that certain bits from the books have been cut out in the movie.
As for Lord Of The Rings, I read the books first. When I heard it was going to be in cinema I was sure it couldn't be translated into a good movie. But Peter Jackson has done a very good job.
Both HP and LOTR are outstanding, in print and on screen.
