Desire Avenue

I watched this film the other night, by Danny Boyle, and it was probably one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in a few years! It's actually beautifully done and poses some really interesting questions regarding the lengths mankind can go in order to survive. I don't want to give anything away about the film, but it's worth watching if you appreciate intelligent sci-fi

This has been on my to-watch list for a while now, it got great reviews when it was originally released.

I watched this movie again at home last night (having seen it in the cinema before) and I'm very impressed by it still. It's a very atmospheric sci-fi movie about human existance. The accompanying music is very good too and adds a lot to the feel of it; in the same way as I liked Solaris (the remake). This movie is a bit of a mix of that movie and 'Event Horizon'.

I watched it last week, some good things in it but also some bad things too. So at the end I can't really tell if I liked it or not...

What are the bad things in your opinion? i'm somewhat bothered by the impossibilities of the mission, but then again it's science-FICTION so i'm not too bothered by them as they are put in a very plausible context where the story and atmoshpere is more important.

The bad guy from the old ship in the story is lame, it ruined the movie in my opinion; it was so obvious something like this would happen when they talked about an old spaceship ! We already saw this 10 times at least so it's boring now.

I liked the end, especially how it became a battle of belief and survival, something the mission was about from the very start. The ending I think reflects the hope for mankind, the worth of one life against millions of lives, and the conflicts of religious belief and what is right. I think the Event Horizon comparisons the film has been getting are very unfair, Event Horizon in it's own right is a brilliant piece of sci-fi horror, Sunshine is not in any respect horror, it's more a film about the different channels of desperation within the characters on whether the mission should be completed or whether their own limited survival is more important. I liked how the characters developed and when they were at the point where they had to allow their natural instics to take over, their true motivations came to the forefront.

I really enjoyed it, and considering there are few truly great Sci-Fi films of intelligence and depth, it was a breath of fresh air for me. I hate Star Trek and Star Wars sci-fi, it's really quite dull and simple. I love sci-fi like 2001, Solaris (original and remake), Blade Runner, Event Horizon, Alien, Sunshine, they all paint a much more dangerous picture of what could lie out there... Hehe....

Maybe I will watch it again, if people here thought it was good, because I really did not like it when I saw it at the cinema, plain boring.

You could also say Solaris is boring; it's the type of movie you've gotta like i guess; not too much action, yet more atmosphere
