this evening we had some severe thunderstorms crossing the south of the Netherlands. I had wanted to go on a trip to the Hague from Rotterdam at 5, but when I immediately got into traffic jams, I decided to take a walk in the park in Rotterdam instead. Then when it started to rain I drove back home. I drove through some very heavy rainshowers with thunder and lightning and was happy to be home. But then when I entered the house I heard it dripping even more than outside !
It turned out the water was coming from many holes in the ceiling (like where there is a light) and it was running not with a few drops, but very hard. So i collected all the buckets I could find and put them with a lot of towels under the places where it was coming down. Then it also turned out there was even more water coming down the ceiling in the church (which is connected to my house). Being one building built in the same way it turned out the gutters were completely filled with rubbish and the water had gone into the ceilings, thus coming out in the cracks and openings. I had called the pastor of the church, so she called more people to help clean up the mess. Also we called a plumber who cleared the gutters. Good thing i only rent a place here, so i'm not responsible, but what an evening! (also only a few of my books got wet and of course some carpets on the floor)
I need some rest now....
I would completely freak if that happened to me. One of my recurrent bad dreams is where I'm sitting in the house and it's raining outside, and the rain gets heavier and heavier and starts coming in through the roof and gradually fills up the whole house. I can't keep my head above water and then the house starts to completely fall apart, and I wake up with my heart pounding.
I think you need to rent another house, Wirbel.

Which is exactly what happened to friends of mine who just happened to be in the path of the tsunami the other year There were fifteen people I knew all renting beach huts in Sri Lanka with their families for Christmas-they all had different stories and,amazingly,ALL survived,but your dream happened to one family-Dad thought he was going to die,floating higher and higher in the hut with no airspace left above the water,holding on to his seven-year-old son,when the walls exploded,and they were able to swim to relative safety.
No,I'm not going to say 'count yourself lucky,Wirbel'. Your experience sounds horrible .
it was indeed stressful and fear was involved too, but it can always be worse of course. I'm just hoping i can leave the house safely now...
things are drying up a bit inside fortunately, but the ceiling in my living looks like a mess still.

yes that's true; it was very hot in Oslo i saw. But now it's cooled down right? It's been a record warm spring so far here as well, thus giving more severe thunderstorms now i guess. I'm growing more and more exotic plants out in the garden
but hey, good time for a bbq Kuhn!
Also I hope there will be warm temperatures (but not so hot) in Norway in july when i'll be there again...
I can't believe the storm we've just had here - in the space of half an hour it's dropped enough rain to completely flood the road in the cul de sac I live in, from top to bottom. There's now a lake out there, coming right into people's gardens. Everyone came out of the houses to marvel at it.
Alarms going off everywhere and I've heard ambulance and police sirens in the last few minutes.
I can't wait for Thames Water to issue the annual drought warning now.

Its getting quite bad up here as well. Its raining steadily and the lightning bolts are sharp but the delayed thunder suggests its a few miles away as yet.
I remember on evenings like this how my grandmother use to go and sit on the stairs during the storms.
Bone dry over here a few miles to the West.
Just spoken to my Ma (in Northampton) who was also flooded.

It seemed to be sitting right on top of us here for a good twenty minutes, incredible lightning and the thunder making your bones shake. I of course was standing at the open window like a loon, as usual with storms. I love watching them.

.......and a month on its still raining and a lot of central England is now getting a tad water logged as the rivers Severn and Thames overflow and flooding towns and villages and cutting off communities.
With no electricity and fresh water running out,a lot of people are finding life rather uncomfortable at the moment.
Anyone here affected? I know Dave lives near the river Avon which must be bursting its banks by now.
The Avon (the one which goes to Bristol) is 100 yards from my door-downhill
Luckily we live at the top of a steep incline so we're in no danger until the next Ice Age.The Avon has burst its banks already,but it gets much worse further along.
But people in Gloucester and Tewkesbury are having a hell of a time,with worse to follow by the looks of it.
And the rain denied England a certain victory in the First Test.
We're quite lucky here, although we live in a valley there aren't any big rivers nearby, thank goodness. I feel so sorry for everyone who's having to cope with flooding, what a nightmare.
One thing I have noticed though is the amount of minor surface flooding in the fields around where I live, after the cloudbursts recently - this is not something I've seen before, ditches and dips turning into temporary ponds. I assume this is an indication that the water table is well and truly replenished.
