My comments were aimed at satirising this attitude that crops up now and again among some of the musicians here, towards other posters who enjoy female pop/rock artists rather than devoting their lives to exploring the stuff they think is so much 'better'. We had this in the Tori thread the other week, and personally I do find it rather patronising. I'm 40 years old, and I've been listening to music since I was a child. In that time, I've investigated all kinds of music - when I was a teenager I was into Motown, punk, chart pop, sixties rock, Gershwin and Porter, and classical music from mediaeval to 20th century. In my 20s that mix was joined by 80s indie music, in my 30s I also got into pretty hardcore dance music (much to my neighbour's annoyance
), and I've tried a bit of world, jazz and folk along the way. I don't need anybody to 'educate' me about the wide variety of music out there. I've settled on the things I personally love - those happen to be intelligent singer-songwriters like Stina and Tori, mainstream-with-a-hint-of-something-extra artists like Bjork and Radiohead, and classical. I'm quite happy with that mix. I don't need anything else, nor should I be made to feel that I'm somehow 'lacking' or 'missing out' by people who don't appreciate the things I like, but would like me to appreciate the things they like. And I find it particularly annoying that these people, rather than just starting threads about their interests and discussing amongst themselves, the way the rest of us do, feel it's OK to come into our threads and sneer, or even make new threads themselves purely for that purpose! There's absolutely no need for it. I wish also that they would try to understand that for some of us, music is something we love and delight in, but not the over-riding life passion it is for them as musicians.
There's nothing wrong with liking pop/rock artists, female or otherwise, and being content with exploring within that field; we're not doing anyone a bit of harm. There's plenty of room on this board for all tastes and preferences to discuss amongst themselves, and no need at all to interrupt or institute threads to complain about someone else's taste.

I'm quite capable of sticking up for my point of view, whether others feel up to coping with my eloquence or not. I love this little community, even with the occasional flare-ups, and I hope to be involved in it for as long as it continues.
