The record industry is attempting to stem the decline in CD singles sales by launching the 'ringle'. It consists of a three-track CD containing three songs — the hit version, a remix and a mobile ringtone version. The concept was initially developed by Sony BMG, but Universal Music is set to be the first label to release the format. American retailers Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon.com have all indicated their intention to stock 'ringles' and it is expected they will be sold at a slight premium over the cost of regular CD singles. The move has been heavily criticised by bloggers and technology analysts, who have questioned both the cost of the format and the appeal of a physical version of a traditionally downloaded product such as a ringtone.

Personally I can't see the point in having your favourite tune as something you have to interrupt almost immediately to answer the phone.
