I've been reading today a magazine article on old songs and i was quite surprised just how old some of them were!
Some of them were even written before Dave,Duncan and I were born!!
Here's a few songs,several of which started life as childrens nursery rhymes and hymns.
circa 1400:In Dulce Jubilo (a hit single for Mike Oldfield in 1975)
circa 1540:Greensleeves
1745: My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean ( of Beatles fame )
1765: Baa Baa Black sheep
1779: Amazing Grace
1818: Silent Night
1830: Maggie May
1848: All Things Bright And Beautiful
1854: Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair ( of Stina fame )
1872: Swing Down (or low) Sweet Chariot
1881: Clementine
1893: Happy Birthday To You (orig: Good Morning To You)
1895: Waltzing Matilda
1903: Two Little Boys ( of Rolf fame )
1915: Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit - Bag
1921: Mammy
I wonder how many of todays songs will still be being played in two or three hundred years time?
I only know very few of them... can you sing them so RobB?
I hope "Imagine" will still be played in the next centuries, and I guess some Beatles tunes would be played too... But no luck to hear Stina in 5 centuries I guess...

Most of those songs are very well known in the UK with the exception of 'Jeannie' (written by Stephen Foster,him wot wrote 'Old Folks' at home' etc) which was a big hit in,er,1854;and 'Maggie Mae' (which will be the one the Beatles touched on on 'Let it be' rather tha the Rod Stewart hit).
Lots of the others are the kind of thing that we used to sing at school.
Ironically when i selected the above songs from a much longer list,i deliberately chose songs from America and Australia to give it more of a global slant.......and still they're not recognisable.
So maybe its just an age thing after all.......Two Little Boys was a big hit here in the UK but then again,that was 35 years when most contributers here weren't even born i suspect. [crazy]
But as Dave says,several of these songs i remember having to sing in school.
........of course,i did say most contributers !! [help]
