Meredith Monk

Meredith Monk (composer, singer, filmmaker, choreographer and director) was one of the inspirations for Bj?rk's Med?lla. Her beautiful music relies mainly on her voice and her piano.

Anyone knows/likes her?

Sure.I saw her live a LONG time ago-20 years,maybe.

I was more taken by her films than her music,but her music was certainly unique-and brave.Haven't heard much of late.

She's one of the most distinctive voice and one of the most genuine artist on earth, no doubt. I don't know her music very well, but her "Do You Be" album is one of my favourite forgotten albums I owe, forgotten because on tape and not easily available, unfortunately. I didn't know Bj?rk was openly influenced by her, didn't even know she made a cover of one of her songs (I'm curious to hear that), but I'm not surprised she aknowledges that influence, simply because Meredith Monk is nearly influencing every women singers who want to do something else with her voice. Most strikingly "different" voice artists make me think of Monk here or there : Iva Bittova, Sidsel Endresen (in a darker and lower mood), Anna Homler, Laurie Anderson, Maja Ratkje even somewhere.

A Meredith Monk contemporary who's worth checking out is Joan La Barbara, she made very fascinating records in her own right and her influence on other singers, if lesser known than Monk's, is not to be underestimated. Her records are unfortunately difficult to find.
