the story is similar to the devil face in the smoke on 9/11.
the wonderful brain we have try to translate what we see in coherent object.
It's only a black stain or a shadowed rock, but if we describe it as a human form then your brain will try to find something human-made.

Oh yes I've seen this all over the net in the last two days.
People are so desperate for familiarity....our brains are preconditioned to seek the human form in shapes.(See 'The Continuum Concept' ,a fascinating book).
And people seem desperate to attribute anything to 'aliens'.Yawn.Why don't they wake up to the endless possibilities of mankind?

We seek our own image everywhere else in our environment, it's programmed into us as Dave says. It's the same thing that causes us to see images of Christ or the Virgin Mary or whatever in petrol stains or condensation.

If any pattern of shapes can be made into a vaguely face-ish image, the brain will coalesce them into a face. It's fascinating, really.

I'm reminded of my childhood,when on hot summer days,I'd lay on my back in my grandad's orchard, and watch the white puffy clouds in the sky and see faces and shapes of countries in them all .

It's also always very interesting how northern people look for faces and human (or Troll) shapes in rocks and old trees. There's plenty of pictures of that online
