The Hours

Anyone seen 'The Hours'?
I watched it on dvd last night having rescued it from a charity shop for a couple of quid a few days earlier.
Its an intriguing film focusing on three disatisfied women in three different time periods who are connected by the book 'Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.

The film begins in 1941 with the suicide of Virginia,before quickly back tracking to 1925 and Virginia's mentally confused state as she tries to write 'Mrs Dalloway'.

Then we jump forward to 1951 and in Los Angeles Laura Brown,a dissatisfied pregnant housewife and mother who is reading 'Mrs Dalloway'.

Then we are in present day New York (2001) and Clarrissa is laeding the life of the heroine in the book 'that Virginia Woolf' wrote.

There are more connections between the three women but to reveal them might spoil the film for anyone yet to see it.

The way the womens lives link to each other is very well done,with the scenes cutting seemlessly from one to the other to the other,to the soundtrack of a typically hypnotic romantic score by Philip Glass.

I should add that Nicole Kidman is hardly recognisable as the authoress.

As you might imagine, I love this film. Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore in the same movie is fifty kinds of awesome to start with, and it's a good, literate adaptation of a brilliant book.Well worth seeing.

I was cleaning a bed in an empty side-room at work last week, and managed to trap my thumb in the frame as I was lowering it back down.

I'm in a cast now for three weeks, then they'll see if I need an operation. Honestly, I'm a danger to myself.
