I saw them live in Liverpool, and it was quite amazing. Not new age at all.
I do agree that his best jazz works are his earlier stuff, for ex with Bobo Stenson, or Towner, or Bill Frisell.
Saw Garbarek (Jan that is) with the Hilliard in Geneva. Quite boring, I have to admit. He still has this tone, and tried to break the monotony a few times. But in the end, no good.
