As we're getting near the end of 2005, it seems a good time to have a few "end of year" polls.
So to start, here's one for our favourite (note "favourite" and not "best") albums of 2005.

Mine are:

1) "Fisherman's Woman" - Emiliana Torrini
2) "Aerial" - Kate Bush
3) "Chaos And Creation In The BackYard" - Paul McCartney.

Three is few but a good number anyway, so here are mine, in order of what comes to my mind :

Animal Collective - Feels
Hanne Hukkelberg - Little Things
Andrew Bird and The Mysterious Production of Eggs

For the rest, I dig out:

Sightings - Arrived in Gold
Lightning Bolt Hypermagic Mountain
In The Country - This was The Pace of My Heartbeat

Discovery of the year, the Danish band Tys Tys
Comeback of the year: Vashti Bunyan

And no, Picsou, I still haven't heard and/or watched the last Supersilent.

My favourite has to be:

Hanne Hukkelberg - Little Things

I got it a week ago, and I've been listening to it constantly since. It's amazing! Also the only CD I've bought this year, apart from recieving Dynamite, PAS and MOAC for my birthday. Which I guess doesn't count.

To my (little) surprise, I got the last Kate Bush album for Christmas/birthday.

my top 3 (ouch) :
- Non Stop - Road movie en b?quilles
a french fun mix of hiphop and rock
- Sun Kil Moon - Tiny cities
a cover album of Modest Mouse songs by Mark Kozelek
- Blumen - Stories
my gf ex-band's last album I recorded with a friend : noise-emo rock with female vocals, arghhhh

actually i didnt buy much new music, i collected more older stuff lately (was dearly influenced by someone special :-p) so this year a lot of associates, siouxie/creatures, cure/glove etc side things, older david bowie stuff, bauhaus, kraftwerk (again), but if i have to name one cd it has to be katies album Aerial. although her older work (the dreaming) might me more uhm. edgy. (oh and i bought second hand the cloudbusting and running up that hill 12"es

among loads of other 12"es. I love that format so much!)

Isolee - Wearemonster (minimal space disco/techno)
Kevin Blechdom - Eat My Heart Out (hyper digital pop from my favorite female who goes by a male name)

Also excellent:

Electrelane - Axes (stereolab vs steve albini)
Robyn - Robyn (Sweden pop represent!)
Kiki & Herb - Kiki & Herb Will Die For You (2 drag queens and a piano at Carnegie Hall for 2 and a half hours)
Woodbine - Best Before End (woozy british folk)
Dandy Jack & The Junction SM - Los Siete Castigos (deep latin house and funk)
Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue (former Moloko star makes good with jazz/electronic/torch songs)
Lindstrom & Prins-Thomas - Lindstrom & Prins-Thomas (If Air became a live psychedelic band...)
YMCK - Family Music (loungy jazz played on video game instruments)
Edith Frost - It's A Game (a sparse breakup album of alt country)
Thomas Brinkmann - Lucky Hands (funky cerebral robots!)
Senor Coconut - Coconut FM (tropical mix of South American, Latin and Carribean club tunes)
Robag Wruhme & Wighnomy Bros - Remikks Potpourri (crunchy IDM clicks and cuts brought to rave at huge stadium levels)
The Glimmers - DJ Kicks (raw disco rock and electro)

Hmm,I'll have to try Roisin's album.

This year I've hardly listened to anything 'new'.(What's new anyway?)
I've been trying to digitalise all my old favourite albums so when I tell you that process has taken over a year,you get an idea of how much music I love.Also filling in holes in my collection.

So my favourite stuff this year-all old or hole-fillings-has been by Xenakis,Morton Feldman,the mid-60's Miles Davis Quintet,a lot of old soul and ska(research for my current-you guessed it-soul/ska band)and a lot of Madagascan music.
Among newer things,I really liked Anja G's latest,and actually some of my real favourite CDs from '05 were two that I played on and arranged

I only bought a handful of albums this year, and they all disappointed me except for the wonderful 'Extraordinary Machine' by Fiona Apple. God love that girl. It really says something when Tori, Kate and Bjork can all release albums in the same year and my favourite is by someone else.

I'm with Dave, the amount of "new" music acquired last year was minimal. In fact, my music listening in general has gone waaaaaay dooooown lately, and it makes me sad. Can't explain it, hope it's just a phase. But two albums on Drag City caught my attention in 2005 for sure:

Gary Higgins - Red Hash (reissue)
Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love

I bought the new box set from The Band from my bfriend for Christmas. I went from hating them not long ago to loving them now. I'm just fascinated by their whole story. And of course we watched The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving... it's becoming a tradition. Rick Danko was hot!

ahum... got very deceived by her last albums... so is that one needs more attention than "in exile deo" for instance ?

"in Exile Deo" didn't strike me as an amazing album like Made In China. I only liked Get in Line and Forever. I'll listen to the others, but they'er not anything I'd go out of my way to listen to. I definitely like it enough to own, though. That goes for all Miss Hatfield's albums really.
