Yes, it's super-cool that I have a friend to share Stina with, but then my friend has excellent taste and is particularly into female vocalists with unusual/strong voices like Kate Bush, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Yoko Ono and Diamanda Galas, so it's not too surprising that Stina should appeal. I agree 'though, that it's usually hard work trying to convince people of Stina's genius - you have to play a more devious game than usual - I try and just introduce them to specific tracks in small doses and I have managed to convert a few people that way

ask your friend about blonde redhead, he might like it if he can do Yoko Ono's voice. a japanese girl and guy italian twins. The latest one and the first album is great, thay all are, but those're my favorites.

We both love Blonde Redhead - they're great! I definitely like a healthy slab of angular guitar music (preferably female-fronted) when I can get it and BR fit that profile perfectly. I think they've evolved a lot over the past three albums, too - they now have a really strong sound that's all their own and it rocks!

The year MOAC came out, as it was played in the record shop I used to visit once a week, in Lund. I liked the record I asked what it was and bought it. Liked the fragile voice and jazzy music.

i was interested in a trumpet player named jon hassell and in tracking down his music found he played on ASCHE (crime & i see you again) i tracked down the disc (this is 1995 may be) > i remeber thinking this music is sublime. like everyone else here, from then on listining to everything i can find.

I read about her (no lie) in a music magazine in 1990 or 1991. I wanna say it was smash hits, but I don;t know if it was still around at that time. Anyway, there was blurb (with picture) underneath a picture of Chris Isaak with his shirt off (which is why I was looking at that page in the first place). I remembered her forever particularly because of her name which I thought was so unique and interesting. fast forward to 1998 and a girl from the Everything But The Girl Forum (Jessica D. Marshall are you here?) I belonged to exchanged mix tapes with me and a few of Stina's songs were on there. Never looked back. Jessica also introduced me to The Innocence Mission and Saint Etienne and I cannot thank her enough for enriching my life as much as she did.

Smash Hits has just folded -- it was on the news last week. I think I was still reading it in 1991 and I don't remember Stina being in there. Perhaps I wasn't paying attention. I wouldn't have been so drawn to Chris Isaak, with or without his shirt on.

And wasn't it called Star Hits in America?

As a young horny teen just discovering his sexuality, ANYTHING without his shirt on would have drawn my attention! As for Saint Etienne, I have EVERYTHING they own (no lie!) including all fanclub releases, promos, compilations. they are probably my fave band (but certainly not my fave forum). Their new album is good, but I must say that Finisterre and So Tough are my favorites!

On the St. Et forum a few days ago, someone just asked if anyone had heard Stina, so there was a good chat about her which was nice. My musical tastes run the gamut, so its nice when people know who I'm talking about.

I can't remember what it was called. My brother still has the magazine I'm sure as he saves everything so I'll have to ask him to look at it. I thought it had folded mid-nineties so I'm not really surprised it went under (at least this second time around for me Ha! Ha!)

Heard 'little star' on hit the north the old Mark Radcliffe show on radio five Was totally blown away by the voice, and have followed her career ever since.

I had just got into Bjork's first solo album in 1993 when MTV Europe came on and Lisa I'anson introduced the daily News section devoted to Stina Nordenstam's ASCHE promotion - mentioning how she was compared to Bjork. This feature, which I still have on tape after it was repeated that night, includes an interview where a stick-thin Stina says she 'thought' that Little Star was about a suicide, and clips of the Press Kit videos of her with an acoustic guitar. I'm still waiting for my brother to give me the nod to record that vhs onto dvd so I can put it up here for people to see.

They also played the Little Star video in full and I was hooked from then on. I rushed out to buy the single the following week and remembered that I had read an interview with her in Melody Maker in 1992, which I can now scan for anyone interested (I had previously taken a bad photo of it before, for people here).

Ahhh, MTV Europe in the early 1990's; Ray Cokes, Davina, etc. etc. That was back when they played proper, if somewhat obscure, European music in primetime and never 'pimped' anyone's ride or crap like that. Sigh.

Also saw My Bloody Valentine and St. Etienne on that channel in 1992 and got into them equally as much as Stina. MTV's 'Post Modern' was a much better programme than '120 Minutes' IMHO.
