9/11 it's that time of the year....

Post by wirbel »

Yes, it's 9/11 today (depending on which time zone you're in ;)) and yea, overhere in the netherlands there's been a lot on tv again about it already with documentaries, tv shows and news programs going on about it. Of course it's an important part of recent history, but what do you all think about it? do you get fed up by it, do you remember it on this day, do you believe in all the conspiracy theories? let's discuss :)

One thing i found interesting watching a program that re-enacted what happened in the twin towers giving eyewitness accounts and stories re-played by actors, was that most people working there didn't seem to have a clue what was actually going on. Isn't that strange that you have all these people mostly working on computers and they do not immediately start looking on the internet checking out news sites what just had happened? they seriously didn't know a plane had hit, and people in the second tower easily went back up to their office after having been told it was safe over the intercom system. So yea, a bit strange in the age of mass-communication... :?

The 11th September was my Dad's birthday. My Dad died when I was 8,so the date has an extra poignancy for me.
I don't like to think about that day five years ago.One of the blackest days in humanity's sorry history.

The London Independent has listed some interesting numbers on their front page today.

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/pol ... 466758.ece

Including the estimated 72000 civilians killed since 9/11.
I dont see any memorial for them ever happening. :(

If it had happened anywhere else in the world other than the US then I think I would have felt a lot more shocked and sympathetic than I actually did at the time.

Same here. the actions led by the USA all over the world during decades could only lead to such event.
And new the War On Terror and the Patriot Act are good examples how bad the W. Bush government behaves.
but of course I'm sad for all those families that lost a beloved one or a family, in the USA, in Iraq & in Afghanistan.

I'm reading more and more theories about that there has to be more than two planes in the Twin Towers. According to several specialists the buildings couldn't have fall down the way they did. And I read somewhere that the hole in the pentagon was too small for a plane. So I wonder where this will lead to. Some people believe that these attacks were set up by the American government to justify the war on terror. But honestly, that I find very hard to believe.

well even if the US government didn't 'plan' these attacks, they sure took advantage of it and I think it came very handy for Cheney and the like. They have business interests in the weapon industry, so a war on terror would mean earning dollars for them.

I don't understand how people can sort of justify the attacks though, cause it is also an attack on the western world and our way of living. The terrorists who plan this have no mercy for any life. So i was shocked by this attack back then and i feel sorry for the people involved.

If only we would choose a different way to react then the jihad people would ;). Only with small direct attacks on terrorist cells using good intelligence (and being sure there's no civilians involved!) and by also at the same time supporting countries that suffer from evil regimes, like iraq and afghanistan.

It wasn't an attack on my way of living. Unless you count that my way of living doesn't involve killing people, crashing planes, demolishing buildings. Just as for any reasonable person, Western, Eastern, Northern or Southern. Apart from the shocking violence, it really doesn't threaten me in the very slightest bit.

Otherwise I agree with you :D 8)

I remember switching on the tv that day to watch the reports, having first heard about it on the radio. I felt sick all day, thinking about those people on the planes. It was a certainty there would have been children on them. That's all I could think about, children having their little harmless lives stolen from them in such a monstrous fashion by thieves with no understanding of how valuable the thing they'd taken was.

This was oddly counterparted for me looking through the newspapers today, and seeing that wonderful photo of all the children born to women who had been pregnant with them at the time their fathers all died in New York.

I just am sickened and terrified by anyone who wants to take another human beings' life, for whatever reason.
(I'm not condoning America either, and her multifarious acts of barbarism around the world.)
This (the 9/11 planes) was just a particularly imaginative and callous method of doing it,and it has bred a massive climate of fear and mistrust around the planet. There's enough fear already.

The other day I saw a documentary about the people who chose to jump from the towers instead of waiting to die in the fire and it made me cry.
I really can't stand and understand the antiamericanism I see here and elsewhere.

I saw this documentary too, "The falling man".
It is not antiamericanism at all, just the way how the USA government acts since years that we blame. In fans a part of the US citizens disagree too so let's say I'm on their side and i'm not against USA.

I think its because of America's attitude (ie because they are rich and powerful enough to swan around the the planet like the worlds police and bully everyone into submitting to do things there way) that is one of the biggest causes for all the problems we have today.

All through history conflicts have been caused by one country (or tribe or whatever) sticking their noses into another countries (etc) affairs when it wasn't wanted.

In the end,one mans terroist is another mans freedom fighter.
Without over simplifying the matter, '9/11' was simply the little kid in the playground giving the big bully a bloody nose.

I guess i just feel more sorry for the underdogs.
