missing cd's and other stuff maybe... :(

So lately i'm missing a lot of cd's and it's making me feel really sad looking for something tonight and not finding it
does this happen to you guys as well? even though some of it I've ripped or downloaded afterwards it's still so much nicer to have the original cd and it's case and booklet and to remember when you've first listened to it and looked at the artwork...
some of what i'm missing:
Emiliana Torrini - Fisherman's Woman
Enigma - MCMXC a.d. (extended edition)
Westbam - Right on (not so good, but anyway...)
Mark'oh - never stop that feeling (a classic )
RMB - widescreen
Tiga - Dj Kicks (great!)

and there's more... I can't believe there's so many; allthough i suspect to have had some of these in one of those 'cd-wallets' and it dropped out of the car... so now i keep my most precious ones (all my Stina cd's) in this big cd-holder that is always in my backpack. (i only take it out when playing a cd or going on a walk... )

I don't tend to misplace CDs, but I'm terrible for not putting them back in their cases straight away, so they end up scratched to bits. I've had to replace so many albums over the years. Nowadays I try to be good and put them away immediately, cos my husband complains if I don't. I've also started copying new purchases straight to mini-discs and playing those instead. So now I have little heaps of mini-discs all round the stereos.

Partly through losing loads of records,books etc to friends who never gave them back over the years,and partly through living with the most untidy and chaotic human in existence,I now NEVER loan records or CDs,I just make copies,and I'm incredibly organised and careful with them.After all,music is my life.
I made a kind of life principle years ago,based on a common sense approach to being in harmony with the earth,that if you take something,you need to put it back in some shape or form.
Similarly if you make a mess,clear it up and leave the place nice for the next person.
And if you play a CD,put it back in its case afterwards.Nothing destroys CDs more than exposure to light anyway.

I havent lost any music in 25 years since i lent a friend some albums and a few weeks after they'd been returned ,i went to play Tyrannosaurus Rex - Prophets,seers and sages, and discovered there was no record in the cover.I told him and he could'nt find it ,and it still annoys me to this day.

Original CDs last about 25 years without problems, but when your burn a copy, this one is much more fragile ! Some cheap CDRs are so sensitive that only after a year the CD doesn'r work anymore. Don't expect to have a good CDR to work more than 10 years.

Its a bit like colour photographs....the dyes in them are supposed to fade after so many years but i've got photos from over forty years ago and they're as good as the day they were developed.
Looked after cds,like colour photos, will last indefinately although the very early manufactured cds are prone to probelms.

All my cds are stored in/on wall mounted racks and shelves in the back bedroom. Most are sectioned off in groups.........the Beatles/ex Beatles cds are in one section in chronological order. The 'female artists' cds are in alphabetical order by surname,except Stina related cds which have a vertical rack to themselves. Same with Kate Bush and Virginia Astley.
'Male artists' and 'Groups' are grouped together,again in alphabetical order. My 'New Age' / 'Ambient' cds are just lumped together in no particular order.

I usually can go straight to a cd without too much difficulty although sometimes i end up putting,say,the Beth Gibbons cd with the 'Portishead' cd and then forget what i've done so that the next time i go to play Beth's album there is a slight panic when i can't find it where i think it should be.

Well, it comes from experience,Alex. I have about seven cases of vinyl albums which are jam packed in not in any particular order.
The time wasted trying to find any given album is frustrating......especially when it usually turns up in the seventh case.

If i only played my vinyl albums more often then i'd probably feel inclined to sort them out in some kind of order too!

I went through ripping my CDs when I was in England. I'm missing New Ancient Strings. It's the only one I've noticed so far. I probably took it out to listen to before I originally left home and it ended up in a different pile somewhere.

So there you go -- a factually a correct but not at all interesting answer.

Oh, another thing. I bought a compilation DVD of music videos earlier in the year that stopped working when I'd only looked at a few of them, which I generally liked. Maybe because of a crackdown on pirates I haven't seen anything like it in the shops since I've been back, and I still don't have television

For legal stuff, the end of Gawain's corrupted. It's comprehensible but very noisy. That's the worst thing I've noticed. And the record label's gone bust so I couldn't buy it again even if I wanted to spend more money on it. Yes, I know, still not interesting...

For Music Videos I just go to YouTube to watch some of that old stuff i hadn't seen for years and if I want i 'download' some and watch it on my mda phone (or your ipod..).

Well i'm also not very unorganized; but i know to put away stuff in places, so everything normally looks very tidy but when you're looking for something it's just very hard to find sometimes; but with some of these cd's i think some are taken, some fell out of the car like mentioned and some might still be at my parent's house somewhere. well i guess i should make a list of these albums, so i can keep an eye for them on ebay or when i find them cheaply in a record store...

i usually rip my CDs to my laptop/iPod and then hide them away in a cupboard in my parents' house to keep them safe.

sometimes they come out for car CD player rotation or if i temporarily lose my iPod (never again will it happen!)
