Yes, it's business as usual. For a recordcompany Tori is just a good selling artist that they make profit on. So they want to make sure that she'll stay succesfull so they can make more money.

I believe that around that time Tori's favourite person (I have no names) left Atlantic. She got in contact with other people that she didn't have a history with. That is where it all went wrong a bit.

The person was Polly Anthony, a high-up executive with whom Tori had formed a good relationship. She was really Tori's protector at Atlantic and went into bat for her many times. Tori trusted her, so when Polly decided to leave Atlantic and move to Epic/Sony, Tori followed her. Unfortunately, Polly left soon afterward and Tori was stuck. She'd signed a contract and there was nothing she could do.

This is where her recent comments intrigue me. She's talked about how A Piano is her way of pulling together the last fifteen years before she 'jumps ship'. That choice of phrase is causing a lot of speculation on the boards. Some people are fearing it means she's going to leave the piano behind from this point, but I really cannot see that happening. I wonder if she actually means her future work will not be released through a record company at all. When she first signed to Epic, the rumour was that it was for two albums only. If that's true, she's fulfilled her contract with Scarlet and Beekeeper.

Tori goes independent?

Hmmm, Tori must have been quite disappointed in Polly too.

Yeps, read that too. I guess that you can read in it that she's going to make music again the way she did in the beginning: with nothing holding her back. I mean: Strange Little Girls was an album to get out of a contract. Tori herself stated that Scarlet's Walk and The Beekeeper were different because she didn't want to upset Tash in any way.

Let's hope so. That would mean there could be decent singlereleases again with b-sides.

And it works for a lot of artists.... which brings the question to mind, did Stina make any profits on TWIS? If not, then her musiccareer could be ending.

I'm sure it did. Stina is a moderately popular artist and her fanbase is pretty loyal i think. Not to mention that it's a brilliant album

But she lends out her voice a lot, too, which she might be doing if she isn't profiting from albums, so it beats me.

Surely Stina has sold 50,000 copies of each album except for ASCHE which sold 125,000 copies. But is that enough to cover the costs of recording songs, making a videoclip, making artwork, pressing the cd and the costs of distribution?

I somehow doubt that.

This needs putting in perspective.Thousands of musicians get by on a great deal less.
Stina is,as aermancer says,moderately popular in the pop/rock field,whch equates to massively popular in any other field of music.If she was a jazz musician,for example,she'd be roughly on the same footing as someone really well known (for a jazzer),like Diane Krall.
No need to worry about her giving up just yet.
In any case,Stina is less of a conventional pop/rock performer,more of an artist.She's governed and motivated not by commerce but by creative need.The pop/rock world is obsessed by commerce.Success is measured in sales,not in quality.The two things are invariably confused.

I just got the A Piano collection, all I can say is Zero Point and Not David Bowie are worth it alone, the alternate take of Baker Baker is divine as is the other take on Flying Dutchman.

The book is very good too, very interesting section on Little Earthquakes, especially with regard to the original track listing, almost 50% different to how it turned out...

Plus i love the box hehe

Has anyone else got A Piano recently? I got it for Christmas, and to be honest, i think it's pretty dissapointing. The "Alternate" or "Re-mixed" versions are just that, re-mixed with an almost unnoticable extra guitar or vocal delay blended in or something.

The unreleased tracks are nice, but really, it would be much cheaper if i had just downloaded the 5 songs instead of spending $70 on songs i already own. what a joke.

I love the box, but I can totally sympathize with those who feel it's too much money for not enough content. It could definitely have been better from a value-for-money perspective; complete b-sides discs, for instance, a disc of some of her extraordinary cover versions, more previously unreleased tracks. I have a feeling all this will come in time, but it will be spread over several releases. And I will buy every one of them.
