And now I can no longer access youtube! Great! Clips are sticking on the 'loading ....' screen. According to the help topics there this may be because of a firewall, or because an application like Windows Media Player is set as the default for handling videos. It says to check.

Which would be fine, if I knew how to check. We seriously need a headbanging emoticon, for my personal use in computer topics.

So I managed to ensure that neither WMP or Sonic Stage are set as default for handling videos, and temporarily disabled both the anti-virus and the Windows firewall. Still nothing doing with youtube. But it's OK, I figured out what the problem is.

About iTunes, it's totally free for Windows users too.

Another tip would be to try VLC media player, a free and open source media player, reliable and featuring many many audio & video formats : http://www.videolan.org/

Saying that, I'm rather for free/open source softwares than proprietary ones.

Thanks for the tip Franck, I'll take a look at it.

Still no idea why I can't access youtube, but I have to laugh. On my old laptop I could see clips fine but had no sound; now I have a spanking new laptop with great sound but can't see the clips.

Ended up downloading this Dave, it seems a good programme and I thought it had done the trick - it ripped all the tracks from the dvds, but unfortunately when I listened to them all I got was crackle, no music.

I've at least worked out how to store the tracks I want on the laptop so I can listen to them via WMP - it was as simple as sending the specified tracks into 'My Documents.'

I'm going to try the converter file again to see if it will go into my files now and change them to mp3.
