why do we like the same music?

stina, kate bush, bjork...my three favorite artists long before i came to this forum.

...arguably the three most talked about artists here. yet their sounds are completely different.

what is it they/we have in common?

Well... actually my taste in music seems to differ somewhat from what I know other people here like. So far the only thing I've seen that I may have in common is Stina (of course) and Bj?rk and maybe Sigur R?s... OH and Anna Ternheim...

I think I'm going to differ from most everyone here,probably because I'm a professional musician myself.I work in all sorts of fields of music,playing jazz,composing and arranging,running two singing groups,being a multi-instrumentalist in theatre,making instruments etc.So my tastes are very wide spanning everything from mediaeval music to contemporary composition,from Java to Jamaica. I think part of my role as a practising musician is to keep an open ear to everything that's going on.
I'm more likely to listen to jazz,ethnic or classical music than any of the artists listed above bar Stina.I tend to like people if i think their MUSIC is good(ie not necessarily the words,in music which involves words).So I listen to lots of instrumental music for a kick-off.
I like Bjork because she,like Stina,is a first-rate musician.But i couldn't say the same for Kate Bush for example,despite her undoubted charisma and originality.

Harrie! I saw Miss Kittin on your list and freaked! I've been obsessing over her for the past few days. It seems she's DJing a club in NYC in october that I'm definitely doing all in my power to get to. sexy music. makes me want to do massive drugs though...that and dance.


There are alot of artists on the lists of everyone here that i love. If i looked up everyone on the lists I'm sure I'd find dozens of artists i would love, but i tend to stick to what i know and collect. Plus, its more exciting finding them on your own.

Ruth - I'm just like that too. I am SO bad at being on the receiving end of a recommendation. I get claustrophobia when people go "you have to listen to this and this and this" or "I bet you'd like this and this and this"... I just ... AAAARGHH!! I know people mean well but I prefer to just find out about stuff in my own time. It's the same when I open a music magazine or watch music show... there is just TOO MUCH for me to handle... maybe I'd like a lot of that music but I just don't have the energy to keep up with it all. If it happens it happens, you know?
