Wrong heading for this section of the forum....

Post by * »

.... should really be 'the sound of female singer songwriters / bands with female lead singers, the more stina-like the better' - just look at the topic heading list, hardly anything lese gets a look in!

Well, you see Wirbel, pop/rock music made by females is not really music. It's just therapy. Always remember that. Only boys can make actual music.

Obviously we need to have a separate section of the board called 'Girls Who Try To Make Music' instead, so we can leave the 'Sound of Music' section for proper music enthusiasts like Duncan and Dave to talk about their favourite REAL musicians. 8)

That's not what I mean.Lots of my favourite music happens to be composed/performed/sung by women. But those women are also people like Carla Bley,Judith Weir,Lili Boulanger,Geri Allen,Irene Joachim, who operate/d in other areas of music,as well as Stina,Bjork,Joni etc.
I mean what about the zillions of other sorts of music-not just pop/rock,singer/songwriter? Why are people so narrow minded? Sorry to be this way,but music is my life and living and I have a missionary evangelical zeal :D
And it is weird how people here only seem to like music made by white folks.

Speaking as a musician and a singer, I think this section should be renamed Dooby Duck's Roller Disco Discussion Den

I love so much music, I couldn't even begin to discuss all of them, I've got over 2,500 CDs and vinyl, even some of my beloved cassettes are still floating about hehe....

I particularly like the following.....

Martina Topley Bird
TV On The Radio
Tracy Chapman (May gawd bless her fast car)
Earthling
Tricky
Raissa
Sheila Chandra (what is she up to these days? I play the Zen Kiss weekly still...)
Cibo Matto/Miho Hatori
Bic Runga
Tanita Tikaram

None of these artists are caucasian, and I certainly recall Tanita and Bic being discussed on here by a good few people... :D

However I think looking at this thread seriously is quite disturbing because I don't think music is something that needs to be rationalised by colour or nationality, but by expression and meaning. :!:

I think most genres in modern rock evolved from blues and folk anyway. Music is an evolution, a living thing constantly changing and being redefined. :D

If only the silly radio stations and AR men of record companies would embrace this and allow it to be heard in this way. I swear to god though, I never want to hear another boy band, vacuous puppet good looking no talent teen trash cat-neuturing-esque starlet ever again!!! Now that's not music, it's profit! :x

Now back to chilling out to Bjork's For All Those Who Don't Buy White Labels EP, bliss, what a lovely day :D

oh dear....

missing the point not once but twice (although it does seem to have got a bit action going here!)

anyway, the point is NOT that it's about women making music - more power to 'em - but as others have gone on to mention there are women making great music in many other genres (not all as just singers), especially genres often seen as 'boys clubs' i.e. a lot of electronic genres.

so elizabeth, shame about the stupid remarks, as:

1) i think women are making great music, so no need for patronising remarks like 'only boys can make real music...' can you see how ridiculous that reads? very patronising.

2) since when have i talked about my favourite 'real' musicians here anyway (real? i deal in electronic music... that's not real, it's only machines, right?) - maybe back in 2003-4? every week since then of course.

indeed i haven't talked for a while here at all, and given that the remarks above seem to show that some people consider this forum to be now an exclusive club - the kind they wanted not to see come about - i'll probably now do exactly what is hoped for and disappear again. flaming is boring.

the idea of the topic was to expand horizons while still introducing people the music genre that seems to dominate this section of the forum. a win:win situation one would have hoped, but no.

sorry elizabeth, but this time you're really out of order - always looking for (perceived) gender bias, even when there isn't one to be found. and well-worded arguments are not what's need here. an apology would be nice.

oh, and did anybody actually LISTEN to any of the links?

well nobody said the music threads should be about a certain type of music style, you're free to tell about whatever you like. But i can imagine that people who like Stina are interested in a similar field of music, northern, singer/songwriter type of music. Most what I listen to is this kind, but also electronic. There is a certain cultural relation to music we listen to; i couldn't imagine listening to 'black' music all the time. Why would this be wrong? It's all about taste and the freedom we have in this. discussion about taste in music is endless and is useless.

'*' (why have you changed your name to a symbol?), did you notice the presence of this smiley:  in my post? Now, what do you think a happy smiley laughing face might mean, in a post? Do you think perhaps it might denote that the person is expressing a sense of fun?

Maybe I should just quit trying to have a sense of humour around you, '*'. Never seems to work.

* wrote:anyway, the point is NOT that it's about women making music
Oh good, because it could seem on first impression that you were questioning the rightness of the part of the board where these artists are discussed being titled 'the music section' and your primary objection seemed to be that they were female singer-songwriters. Glad to help you clear up any confusion.

* wrote:so elizabeth, shame about the stupid remarks, as:

I sincerely apologise for being stupid and patronising, Duncan. I'll try to improve myself so I can one day hope to reach the great heights of your intellect and completely unpatronising attitude. Perhaps you could try to aquire a sense of humour, too, and an ability for discerning when people are having fun? Might help you with that over-defensive paranoia thing you've got going there. [tup]
* wrote:2) since when have i talked about my favourite 'real' musicians here anyway (real? i deal in electronic music... that's not real, it's only machines, right?) - maybe back in 2003-4? every week since then of course.
So why don't you just start some threads for your favourite bands/artists, rather than pointing and sniggering at people for liking female-oriented pop/rock music? I seem to recall asking exactly the same thing of Dave. Go talk about what you feel passionate about! Complaining about other people's taste on the board is pointless and a waste of time, and also pretty patronising.

Oh boo-hoo. If you'd get a handle on your bloody over-sensitivity and crack a smile now and again, you might not have felt the need to take what is clearly signalled as a humorous contribution to the thread in such po-faced defensive earnest.

You were not 'flamed', you idiot. You were played with, in a jocular manner. If you want to take it some other way that allows you to disappear, go right ahead. I hope you'll get a grip and stay, the board misses you. [akiss]
* wrote:sorry elizabeth, but this time you're really out of order - always looking for (perceived) gender bias, even when there isn't one to be found.
I wasn't in the least out of order, and I don't have to look for gender bias, it's already there. Mind you, I don't know why I'm surprised, it's not the first time you've saddled me with that accusation when you're the one who's brought gender into it in the first place.
* wrote:and well-worded arguments are not what's need here. an apology would be nice.
Unlike yourself, I'm quite able to apologise when I feel I've done something wrong - I think there are one or two examples of that hereabouts. But I will not apologise for having a sense of humour, for being playful. I think it's you who owes me an apology, though I shan't hold my breath as I'm still waiting for the last one you owed me.

To stop the flame war I may create a topic about Iron Maiden and Sepultura :D
I believe in your smile everyday
But I know that you're far from my way
When I talk to the moon I can hear you
In the dark I can see, I can feel your light

You know on second reading of the posts in this thread, I must say I am more than a little confused about the responses of *.

I don't know if it was my interpretation or just plain common sense, but Elizabeth's comments were not offensive in the slightest, and did not have any gender bias connetations, rather just a wry sense of humour that I could appreciate.

Maybe you've taken something intended with humour way too seriously.

If we are getting specific regarding the importance of musicianship vs electronica, well, as a musician and electronic enthusiast, I personally did not see any critisism or anything that would cause me personal offence.

I think the point that should be emphasised is that music is music, whatever the shape, form or style. I don't see the point in flaming.

I know that maybe I am not one to talk after my imfamous post from a couple of years ago, but I think the point of this topic is out of hand and I think some out of order things have been said by *.

I really hope that this does not mean that Elizabeth will disappear from the forum, as I personally feel that she has been unfairly taken out of context and does not deserve such a vicious response. She is an important presence here and I think many of us will agree that we certainly miss her when she isn't posting.

Like Elizabeth has said in her own defense, smilies are for a reason. Text alone can have such varied interpretations, and the smilies help create a definite vibe to what we have to say here. I have deliberately not used smilies in this post, so it will be interesting to see what response I get to this.

I am all for the introduction of new or unfamiliar artists to the sound of music board. If it's not for word of mouth many of our favourite singers/groups would never have been discovered. I know that I nearly always check out artists who are discussed in threads. So lets please get back to sharing great music with each other, it's not much fun to read negativity.

Now does anyone fancy a glass of merlot? hehe...
