Re: How are you today?

Ha.Well in our case it's little furry friends who live in our loft in wintertime, despite cat,dog and Dad using all means at our disposal to keep them outside. We USED to have a lot of saltdough Xmas decs.

Just about to go and get our tree. Our last one, which served us for 7-8 years,is now too big to fit in our living room,so I've just sweated and grunted and planted it in our garden (next to two other happily growing old ones).

Just got a card from RobB this morning, thanks RobB! Unlikely that I'll send one back except possibly an email one.Bah humbug.

But I thought I'd share this with you all that I got in an email this morning-you have probably seen it already, but anyway:-

'When singing carols this year - just bear the following in mind!!

The Rocking Carol

Little Jesus, sweetly sleep, do not stir;
We will lend a coat of fur,
We will rock you, rock you, rock you,
We will rock you, rock you, rock you:

Fur is no longer appropriate wear for small infants, both due to risk
of allergy to animal fur, and for ethical reasons.
Therefore faux fur, a nice cellular blanket or perhaps micro-fleece
material should be considered a suitable alternative.
Please note, only persons who have been subject to a
Criminal Records Bureau check and have enhanced clearance will
be permitted to rock baby Jesus.
Persons must carry their CRB disclosure with them at all times, and be
prepared to provide three forms of identification before rocking
commences.

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way

A risk assessment must be submitted before an open sleigh is
considered safe for members of the public to travel on.
The risk assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to
use only one horse for such a venture, particularly if passengers are
of larger proportions.
Please note, permission must be gained from landowners before
entering their fields. To avoid offending those not participating in
celebrations, we would request that laughter is moderate only and
not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.

While Shepherds Watched

While shepherds watched their flocks by night
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around.

The Union of Shepherds has complained that it breaches health and
safety regulations to insist that shepherds watch their flocks without
appropriate seating arrangements being provided, therefore benches,
stools and orthopaedic chairs are now available. Shepherds have also
requested that due to the inclement weather conditions at this time
of year they should watch their flocks via cctv cameras from centrally
heated shepherd observation huts.
Please note, the Angel of the Lord is reminded that before shining his
/ her glory all around she / he must ascertain that all shepherds have
been issued with glasses capable of filtering out the harmful effects
of UVA, UVB and the overwhelming effects of Glory.

Little Donkey

Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load

The RSPCA have issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a
load a donkey of small stature is permitted to carry, also guidance
regarding how often to feed the donkey and how many rest breaks
are required over a four hour plodding period.
Please note that due to the increased risk of pollution from the dusty
road, Mary and Joseph are required to wear face masks to prevent
inhalation of any airborne particles.
The donkey has expressed his discomfort at being labelled 'little'
and would prefer just to be simply referred to as Mr. Donkey. To
comment upon his height or lack thereof may be considered an
infringement of his equine rights.

We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

Whilst the gift of gold is still considered acceptable - as it may be
redeemed at a later date through such organisations as 'Cash for
Gold' etc, gifts of frankincense and myrrh are not appropriate due to
the potential risk of oils and fragrances causing allergic reactions. A
suggested gift alternative would be to make a donation to a worthy
cause in the recipient's name or perhaps give a gift voucher.
We would not advise that the traversing kings rely on navigation
by stars in order to reach their destinations and suggest the use of
RAC
Routefinder or satellite navigation, which will provide the quickest
route and advice regarding fuel consumption. Please note as per the
guidelines from the RSPCA for Mr Donkey, the camels carrying the
three kings of Orient will require regular food and rest breaks. Face
masks for the three kings are also advisable due to the likelihood of
dust from the camel feet.

I really must make an effort to actually post my cards this year. Usually I write them out and then just stick them in a drawer, where I find them in February and have to slap myself. Again.

It's my works' Christmas meal tonight, and I'm in a kind of bah humbug mood myself. My boss wants to go to a club after and I cannot get it through to her that whilst that might be thrilling for someone her age, I am in my 40s and never liked clubs in the first place! She just laughs.

I'M NOT GOING.

I agree.Clubs are hell.Please let's not go clubbing on April 10th.

I used to work in one, mind. As a pianist (on a crappy white baby grand so that the clientele could lean on it and do their best imitation of schmoozing) in the upstairs cocktail lounge above the maelstrom. Did that every Friday/Saturday night for a couple of years. Unbelievable things were seen. The cocktail bit was where slebs were ushered, usually footballers and their ilk,and all the nasty things they get taken to court about (fights, attempted rape etc) are undoubtedly true.Deeply horrid.
I played cool modern jazz, sometimes with a sax player and a bassist, but I/we were regularly asked to play 'Stairway to Heaven' (I used to say-fine,but you sing the guitar solo, mate), 'Bat out of Hell', and a Geordie even once asked me to play 'Purple Haze',at which I just laughed and nearly got myself in hospital as a result.

You and Tori would get on. She has a few horror stories to tell from her days in the piano bars. Not least being asked to play 'Memories' six nights a week.

You mean the Andrew Lloyd Webber one? [censor]
Amazingly nobody has ever asked me to play that. RobB has beaten me to it,but if they did,I'd say,'Sorry,I don't remember that'.
There are lots of other tunes that I've pretended I didn't know to avoid playing them,eg most of Elton John's canon.

Reminds of an anecdote about some famous jazzer who was in a restaurant being interviewed, when over the Tannoy came 'Just the way you are' or some other paragon of vapidity.
Famous jazzer-'Oh,my second-favourite tune!'
Interviewer (surprised and puzzled)-Oh,....er..right? So ...er ....what's your favourite then?'
FJ-'All of the others'

Gorgeous photos Rob! ^ ^

It's snowed here too all through the night, I'm so delighted - proper Christmassy! It'll probably be gone by the day itself of course, but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Had a lovely meal out last night, and as luck would have it, my boss had abandoned her idea of dragging us to a club after because her girlfriend isn't very well and she wanted to get home to her. She almost changed her mind when we left the restaurant and encountered a group of rather drunk young ladies in skimpy Santa outfits and thigh high black boots, going into one of the local dives .... I managed to drag her away. :D

Lovely food we had at this new place, it's Bangladeshi cuisine, very mild and delicately flavoured compared to some other Asian cuisines. And the veggie options are all naturally vegan, which is great for me. Good to know there's somewhere in town I can eat out now.

Remembered to post my Christmas cards today. I'm doing so well this year. :D

Good to hear you enjoyed your evening meal out. :D

Envy envy...no snow here,just f...... freezing.
Went our carol singing round the pubs tonight...Not a huge amount of folk out boozing.I think it's becoming unfashionable.Everybody does everything at home these days.
Anyway we had a laugh and raised quite a bit of moolah for my partners' music therapy charity.

Can't wait for some snow.Tobogganing!!

The smoking ban in pubs is partly responsible for that I think, Dave. At this time of year people don't want to have to stand outside to have a cig. Smokers are treated worse than animals these days. Seriously - if you made an animal stand outside in rain and below-zero temperatures you'd have the RSPCA on you!

There was some sort of carol extravaganza going on in town when I got there last night, but it was too bloody cold to hang around and listen. :D

Ah yes.As an ex-smoker,I appreciate this.
But I always think now-why is anyone still smoking? it's so stacked against you.Where's the enjoyment?

Meanwhile I think it's more than that,a combination of loads of things but people are less sociable publically generally. At least that's what it seems like..

Exactly the reason why I have stopped sending postcards. Although I do miss receiving all those cards, it looked lovely all those cards on one shelf in the livingroom.

Oh, I do love clubbing! Dancing all night is the only workout I would do happily. But just a month ago I went clubbing with my boyfriend and another friend, and I discovered that I was one of the oldest people attending the party. That was a wake-upcall.

So Beth, I praise your effort of doing something that goes with your age.

Maybe you could learn knitting. It seems to provide comfort to many other old ladies.

Great that there's smoking ban in restaurants and pubs in the UK. I was wondering about that. As a non-smoker I did have some troubles with smoking in restaurants and clubs. It's really a delight I don't have to wash my clothes just because I went to a bar (which used to be the case).
