Personally i would have positioned the albums by Au Revoir Simone, Stina, Emiliana and Kate Bush a lot higher but overall its quite a good list.

Never heard of half those people. What a narrow line of inquiry the list represents. 'Ys' at No. 1 is a peculiar choice, too.
And of course TWIS should be there!
Bjork's 'Vespertine', yes, her best album of the decade, should be there, of course, but I find it rather shocking to think that her BETTER work is all back in the 90s now.

I have more than 20 of them and other albums by artists on this list. And I'd love to listen to the others on the list, most seem really interesting.

But my top 100 wouldn't have been without:

'Wears The Trousers' was set up specifically to cover female artists, Dave. It was started by a group of writers and musicians who were outraged by a comment made by a male journalist in a review of Tori's 'The Beekeeper', where he expressed the opinion that she wouldn't make another good album unless her daughter was abducted and murdered.

The comment understandably provoked much disgust and a lot of discussion about the way female artists are covered in the largely male-dominated music press. 'Wears The Trousers' was the result. They've had some fantastic interviews with women musicians since they started, it's a good site for anyone interested in female artists.

Well, I'm not surprised. Is it all pop/rock women though? there are loads of women working in the jazz and classical fields,...and soul, r&b, world music, country....etc etc.

Oh talking about jazz, a female singer I forgot to mention in the list above: Sidsel Endresen. From jazz to really experimental improvisation. To discover.

No they're not, but Karen O is the creative powerhouse of the band. Other female-fronted bands are covered too.

The overall premise is to cover female artists working in different genres, but understandably the focus is mainly on singer-songwriters working within the rock world, I guess because that's what the readership is largely interested in. You do find articles and interviews now and again with women musicians working outside that field though.

I've been listening to a great female singer, Yolanda Quartey.
She sings for one of my favourite bands right now - Phantom Limb. Oddly for me, they work in an area I don't frequent too often, namely country soul-but they are fabulous musicians. Check out 'Run'-either the track or the video- in the link above.
Yolanda has also worked with Massive Attack.

I saw them at WOMAD this year and was instantly drawn in by their musicianship and restraint and class. Later on I discovered that they're from Bristol-I'd assumed they were the real thing from across the pond-and later still realised that I've gigged with one or two of them in jazz setups- I was too far from the stage at WOMAD to see their faces. They're building a following in an unfashionable area.

It would be good to see the likes of Yolanda, and people like Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and elder stateswomen like Carla Bley, Joni etc in that Trousers list.

I cannot believe that 'Smiling and Waving' isn't on that list, when overhyped works of musical nonsubstantiality like Florence and the Machine are.

Joanna Newsom is in the list with two albums (if I remember correctley she's the only one with two albums in the list). Both albums are in the top 25. Now that's overrated (although I do love some of her tracks).

Yes, I like some of 'Milk-Eyed' but everything since is a *tad* overblown. 'Sprout and the Bean' would make my top 20 tracks by Women of Mass Distribution in the 2000s, though.
But TWIS, at least, blows all her stuff out of the water.

I must say Florence is one of the few recent female singer-songwriters I've enjoyed - love that album, my brother introduced me to it. 'Dog Days' is awesome.

I wish I could get past Joanna Newsom's voice, but she reminds me so much of the sock puppet Lambchop from my 70s childhood, I just can't take her stuff seriously.

The first time I ever heard her was when she performed 'Sprout and the Bean' live on Later, I ended up in hysterics laughing, even though I could recognise the song was pretty great. Maybe I'd like her stuff sung by someone (anyone) else!
