Sick Brits?
It's early morning
No one is awake
I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
Imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
When it lands
Will my eyes
Be closed or open?
No one is awake
I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
Imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
When it lands
Will my eyes
Be closed or open?
I believe in your smile everyday
But I know that you're far from my way
When I talk to the moon I can hear you
In the dark I can see, I can feel your light
But I know that you're far from my way
When I talk to the moon I can hear you
In the dark I can see, I can feel your light
I used to play that song incessantly. I love how the potential of the lyrics changes depending on the musical treatment - in the slow, haunted version that was backed by just a droning synth line, it seemed very much to be about someone contemplating suicide. In the version where the music was more upbeat, almost dancey, it was obviously Bjork just contemplating chucking herself off a cliff as a novel experience, to see what it would be like.
Ice, you were the one most tender with the rivers.
You, the roof of the waves, layer after layer after layer ...
You, the roof of the waves, layer after layer after layer ...

I had a very close experience with someone very dear to me, who attempted suicide 3 years ago and I stopped them. I had to.
I know so well what despair, self loathing, failure, stress, and particularly what other people, can contribute to a mental breakdown. Suicide is done for the relief of one whom cannot bear to contend with their lives anymore. Every day I think of what my life would be like now if I had not have done what I did and in a way it maybe was selfish of me because I could not bear to let them go and I knew I could help them.
But I can sit here now and say quite openly that it was the right and only thing to do, because it would have destroyed me to have let him go. It's still an uphill battle each day and I've put myself through a lot of hell to keep it from happening again. I can tell you that once you know someone can make the pro-suicide decision, it is a worry about them that never leaves you.
Regardless of all the shit that I have been through over the last 12 years, I've never had the 'ability' to reach a decision of such impacting magnitude, and in someways I have an uncomfortable admiration for people who have the determination to go through with such a final act. However the despair and loss of being the one left behind for me would have eclipsed anything else, along with the self blame that would have undoubtedly consumed me too.
If I had not realised what was happening at the time, and had discovered my partner dead in the morning, I don't know who I would be now or what I would be doing. And I think what I am trying to say is if you can stop someone, you should stop them, but as with most cases of suicide the faux optimism of the individual prior is such a grave red herring, the chance is often snatched from you before you can act.

I dreamed of 747's, over geometric farms...
which version was that again?blue wrote:I used to play that song incessantly. I love how the potential of the lyrics changes depending on the musical treatment - in the slow, haunted version that was backed by just a droning synth line, it seemed very much to be about someone contemplating suicide.
I forget which single it was on, all my Bjork singles have long since gone the way of ebay so I can't check. Actually I'll do a search on Amazon and see if they have it. This synth-line version was my favourite out of all the reworkings of the song, it was so melancholy and it really did feel like she was contemplating suicide, the way she sang it.
Any other Bjork fans remember what it was called?

Excellent, thank you!
It was the Girl's Blouse Mix, but I'm really surprised to see that's attributed to OUTCAST?!! Um .... that's amazing. There's no beats on it at all, it's just this really sad synth sound all the way through, I always assumed it was Bjork's own demo version or something.

It's not the Outcast, but rather a little known One Little Indian Records band that put out one rather unusual album back in 1996 called Out Of Tune. It's very dark, minimal and in places frighteninly beautiful. They used a variety of female singers on the album...if you can find it check them out!!
